The Zuma Restaurant has opened its doors, just a few steps away from the Plaza Colón in the heart of Madrid. Almost twenty years after opening the first Zuma in London, , the new Madrid restaurant follows in the wake of successful venues already operating in New York, Dubai, Mykonos, Hong Kong, Miami, Las Vegas, among others. The Azumi Group has now opened its first restaurant in Spain in an unbeatable location, next to the Hotel Fénix, a Gran Meliá Hotel.
Following the style of its other restaurants, the cuisine at Zuma Madrid will be based around three key concepts: a sushi counter, a main kitchen and robata, (a traditional Japanese fishermen’s grill that uses bincho-tan charcoal made from burnt oak). The restaurant will serve contemporary Japanese cuisine, using the highest quality ingredients and exquisite tableware to create a 360º sensory experience that can also be paired with curated cocktails and a great choice of premium sakes. Chef Javier Blanco will bring his expertise and experience from Zuma Mykonos and Zuma London to Madrid to offer a perfect fusion of creativity and simplicity, elegance and sophistication.Zuma offers a sophisticated twist on the traditional Japanese izakaya style of informal dining.
In the 8,600 square foot space that the restaurant occupies in a prime location on Madrid’s Paseo de la Castellana, the Japanese architect Noriyoshi Muramatsu has designed a space using typical Japanese materials such as recycled pine, using the four natural elements of earth, fire, water and air to create a modern ambience. The design also pays tribute to the Madrid with the use of ceramic tiles that combine both Japanese and Spanish culture. Noriyoshi’s design also brings the outside in, unifying the spectacular Paseo de la Castellana with the restaurant interior through the use of wooden lattices to cover the windows, creating subtle plays of light that become a key focus point of the design.
“After the successful opening of the Roka Restaurant in our magnificent ME Dubai hotel, Zuma Madrid is another milestone in our company’s global strategy to offer the most innovative and prestigious gastronomic concepts in the world, said André P. Gerondeau, Global Vice President of Operation for Meliá Hotels International.
