Each season, the television networks introduce dozens of new TV shows and hope that each will be a big hit in the ratings. Unfortunately, most are cancelled after one season. How are the new 2020-21 TV series doing? Which have the best ratings and which have the worst? How many will survive to see a second season? Stay tuned.
Here are the season average ratings of the new 2020-21 network TV shows — through the end of week 51 (Sunday, September 12, 2021).
New ABC shows (so far): Big Sky, Call Your Mother, The Celebrity Dating Game, Celebrity Wheel of Fortune, The Chase, The Con, Emergency Call, Home Economics, The Hustler, Pooch Perfect, Rebel, Soul of a Nation, Supermarket Sweep, Superstar, The Ultimate Surfer, and When Nature Calls with Helen Mirren.
New CBS shows this season (so far): B Positive, Clarice, The Equalizer, The FBI Declassified, The Greatest #AtHome Videos, House Calls with Dr. Phil, Manhunt: Deadly Games, One Day at a Time, Secret Celebrity Renovation, Star Trek: Discovery, and United States of Al.
New CW shows this season (so far): Devils, Kung Fu, The Republic of Sarah, Superman & Lois, Swamp Thing, Trickster, Walker, Wellington Paranormal, and World’s Funniest Animals.
New FOX shows this season (so far): America’s Most Wanted, Call Me Kat, Cherries Wild, Cosmos: Possible Worlds, Crime Scene Kitchen, Fantasy Island, Filthy Rich, Game of Talents, The Great North, Holmes Family Effect, Housebroken, I Can See Your Voice, LA’s Finest, Let’s Be Real, The Masked Dancer, Name That Tune, and neXt.
New NBC shows this season (so far): Capital One College Bowl, Connecting…, Debris, Family Food Night!, Kenan, Law & Order: Organized Crime, Mr. Mayor, Nurses, Small Fortune, Transplant, Weakest Link, and Young Rock.

Notes: Cosmos: Possible Worlds is not the first season of the series but, we are treating it as such because the previous season aired more than six years ago. The Greatest #AtHome Videos is included because, though it debuted during the latter part of the 2019-20 season, the first season continued into the 2020-21 season. America’s Most Wanted isn’t a new show but is included because it’s been years since its last season.
The averages are based on the final national numbers (live plus same-day viewing). Keep in mind that the demo numbers are typically what’s most important to advertisers. Therefore, that’s how the networks measure success. Advertisers typically pay more for ad time on a show that has a higher demo rating. Because older viewers don’t count? No, it’s because younger viewers watch less traditional TV and are harder to reach. It’s also important to remember that ratings are designed to estimate how many people watch a show’s commercials — not the show itself. That’s what advertisers pay for.

Big Ears Festival Returns to Tennessee in 2022
For the first time in three years, the Big Ears Music Festival returns to Knoxville, Tennessee on March 24-27, 2022. Hosting over 100 concerts spanning various genres, the festival will have over 12 venues, and will feature films, exhibitions, talks, workshops, parties, and surprises.
Headliners include Kim Gordon, Animal Collective, Yves Tumor, Low, John Zorn, Sparks, Meredith Monk, Moses Sumney, and Annette Peacock.
Two large concert events are scheduled for the anticipated fest. Composer and instrumentalist John Zorn will present eight concerts throughout the four-day festival, with 14 collaborators joining him on stage including Bill Frisell, Stephen Gosling, and Kenny Grohowski. A tribute to the musical world of New Orleans, rooted in Haitian and Cuban sounds, will be the first time Big Ears will celebrate the legacy and worldwide impact of the music. The Krewe Du Kanaval event is curated by Preservation Hall’s Ben Jaffe.
Tickets for the festival go on sale at noon EST on September 16. Fans can purchase passes on the festival’s website.

Noma Awarded Three Michelin Stars for First Time

Today, history was made. Yes, we are talking about the only news that matters: 18 years after opening to international acclaim and forcing food lovers around the globe to Google the words “sea buckthorn,” Rene Redzepi’s restaurant Noma posted on Instagram that Michelin decided to award the restaurant its coveted three-star rating, a designation that had thus far eluded the otherwise-as-acclaimed-as-possible restaurant. In the parlance of the Michelin guide, this means the restaurant is “worth a special journey!” (That exclamation point is theirs.)
Maybe, at long last, the jet-setting gourmands of the world will start paying attention to this small-town hit?

Normani Delivers Seduction In Her 2021 MTV VMAs Performance
Normani was already the talk of the MTV VMAs before she even touched the stage, stunning spectators with her white ensemble.
“An icon in the making,” Ciara said, welcoming Normani to the stage for her epic 2021 MTV VMA performance.

Normani, 25, nailed her choreography during her performance of her hit song, “Wild Side,” which is now officially certified gold. Cardi B is featured on the track but was not present at the show, likely due to the recent birth of her son. Despite Cardi’s absence, the performance was seductive, flirty, and intoxicating.
Normani is seen wearing a silver outfit, channeling her inner Aaliyah, Ciara, and TLC, all at once. Normani has mentioned in the past that she is inspired by 1990s R&B and it showed.
Her lead single “Wild Side” is her interpretation of the late Aaliyah and Timbaland’s “One In A Million.”
“I really just believed in this record and when I’m passionate about something it’s undeniable,” she said during her interview with ESSENCE. “I honestly allowed the music take the lead and inspire me. This project seriously took an army to achieve. I really wanted to be intentional and focus on detail in every possible way. We actually had proper time to prepare the right way which makes all the difference for me. This is my best work to date by far visually.”
Penguin Series in Development at HBO Max
Oswald Cobblepot is getting his own series as HBO Max is currently developing a Penguin series that might be connected to The Batman.

Deadline brings word that it’s not clear if Colin Farrell, who plays Penguin in The Batman, will reprise the role for the upcoming show. The series will focus on Cobblepot’s past and show his rise to power in Gotham’s seedy underbelly rather than him as the established kingpin. The character has a rich history of live-action appearances as Danny DeVito famously played Penguin in Batman Returns and Robin Lord Taylor portrays him in Gotham.
The upcoming Penguin series is said to be in early development and will be executive produced by The Batman‘s Dylan Clark and Matt Reeves. It is a joint project between 6th and Idaho, DC Entertainment, Dylan Clark Productions, and Warner Bros. Television.

This isn’t the first spin-off of The Batman to be in development. There’s also a show focusing on a crooked cop in the Gotham Police Department that will serve as a prequel to the film that Joe Barton will serve as showrunner. It’ll take place in Batman’s first year, while the movie is set in the caped crusader’s second year.
