Eric Lange & Jeff Ward Discuss Their Fates in Brand New Cherry Flavor

0

Netflix’s latest horror series Brand New Cherry Flavor is out now and it’s incredibly unique with kittens, vampires, odd sex scenes, and much more. The series stars Rosa Salazar in the lead role as aspiring filmmaker Lisa Nova with Catherine Keener, Eric Lange, and Jeff Ward rounding out the main cast.

“Lisa Nova comes to LA dead set on directing her first movie,” reads the official synopsis. “But when she trusts the wrong person and gets stabbed in the back, everything goes sideways and a dream project turns into a nightmare.  This particular nightmare has zombies, hitmen, supernatural kittens, and a mysterious tattoo artist who likes to put curses on people. And Lisa’s going to have to figure out some secrets from her own past in order to get out alive.”

ComingSoon Editor-in-Chief Tyler Treese spoke to Brand New Cherry Flavor stars Eric Lange and Jeff Ward about their character’s fates in the show, that awkward yet inventive sex scene, and much more in a spoiler-filled chat.

Tyler Treese: Eric, Lou’s character arc I thought was really interesting because he’s this total sleazebag producer, but even then, as a viewer, I started to have some sympathy for him. You see him truly care for his son, and there’s a very human element there. Were you glad that it wasn’t just a one-note character?

Eric Lange: Yeah, for sure. That’s credit to Nick [Antosca] and Lenore [Zion] too for shaping it that way. It’s really easy for that to become a caricature. I feel like when you look upon the mountain of famous people that are standing at the top of it, it’s easy to judge. It’s easy to sort of assume their lives are nothing but ease and parties, but I like seeing underneath the veneer and behind the facade as it were. Like I was saying a few moments ago, I feel like it is so easy to have him fall in that category that my job is to sort of the boxing match I’m in is to get the audience to be on my side of it.

Even though he was inappropriate, even though there was this snap of violence, like if I can win a little sympathy back, that would be an interesting challenge for me. He does have things he loves and he cares about, and he’s a human being. He experiences loss and he experiences this fading career that he’s grappling his way through. So, I do, I see Lou as sort of more pathetic than anything. I’m glad I got a little hook in your side there to not just hate the guy.

Jeff, you get to play this very interesting character. He is a self-destructive actor that’s really just looking for meaning in his life. He’s a more well-rounded character than in the novel. He has very much a lesser role there. How did that inform how you played that role?

Jeff Ward: Yeah, it’s interesting that you bring that up because when I looked at the novel, obviously he’s this kind of creepy, not creepy, but just like crazy obsessed, you know, kind of a psycho, not psycho, just crazy obsessed. Psycho is relative in this world. But he’s this crazy obsessed movie star and then goes and gets beheaded immediately. It’s so shocking in the book, but I think what Nick and Lenore did by taking that same arc and that same story and stretching it out over the whole season, I thought that was just so smart because I think in that way, by releasing this curse into the world, Lisa cost herself Roy, who would have been much more than the film and much more than anything else, her ultimate prize. It’s in a classic Pandora’s box scenario. It’s kind of like the thing that she didn’t even know yet was going to be the most precious thing is literally ripped away from her.

Eric, I would love to know what really grabbed you about the script and made you want to be about this project? Because it’s so unique. I’ve never watched anything quite like it.

Lange: Well, that’s your answer right there. I’m lucky I’ve gotten to work a lot in my career, but when you look back, it’s the kind of things that are made, especially these days, there’s lots of remakes. There’s lots of formulaic stuff and they do it because it works and it makes money. I understand that, but you don’t often get to really walk out on the edge of something on the edge of this expansive, what are people going to think about this? When we were doing it, sometimes I was like, this is kind of like watching a car crash in slow motion. These YouTube videos or whatever. Some people are fixated by them and love to watch and other people, it frightens them and they turn them off.

But, the arc of the curse and just the true weirdness that goes on in this thing, I was just more curious than anything. Like, how are we going to do this? It was just such a unique, singular challenge, unlike anything I’ve ever been a part of. I like it for the viewing audience, because I feel like it’s, again, like you say, it’s just totally out of the ballpark of what we’re used to seeing. As an actor, I got to do a bunch of things I’ve never gotten to try and do in any other piece of work.

ï»ż

Jeff, this has one of the strangest sex scenes I’ve ever seen with the rib cage wound. Like, I’m sure that was like a prosthetic, but how odd was that to film?

Ward: Incredibly strange. I thought maybe, cause we were discussing it earlier, when I read the script, it was very shocking, but honestly it looked so real that it was horrifying. It’s really cool because I think the [way the] entire show is shot, there’s no handheld in the show and for that scene for all of the sudden, it breaks and becomes a handheld shot when she crawls across the bed and over to Roy. To me, it’s such an amazing directorial and cinematic, Matt Sobel, who directed it, and Nick, and the choice of that to kind of literally break out of the mold of how the show is being made. I think that by being handheld you’re so in that position with them and you’re so like, what is going on, this is so crazy that can’t believe this is real and kind of just sort of going with this crazy.

I mean, I guess if you walk in on someone throwing up kittens, a side whole that they’re sexually stimulated by maybe isn’t that weird, but it was really shocking to read, and then it was crazy to try and perform. I think Rosa is amazing in that scene. Then it was funny because there’s one take that ended up being in the show. That was the last take we did that. It felt very electric and real, and it was the one that you ended up seeing. So hopefully it translates in that way because it’s such a surreal set piece that is so different and interesting. The game is can you make it make sense and relevant and not just be a cheap set piece, be something that actually means something. I think it does both. It’s stunning you because you never seen anything like it, but also it feels like it weirdly fits in the show and in their dynamic and their story and it fits.

Lange: The level of commitment in that scene. I was saying earlier that you see the zombies and the blood and the guts and the kittens. But when I watched that, that’s the first time in my head I was like, “My parents, I don’t know if my parents can watch this show.” Part of it is to credit them, Rosa and Jeff, that the level of commitment that it feels so effing real. It’s disturbing in such a real way.

Eric, Lou is so passionate about films, but he’s left blind and he’s lost so much. But he’s one of the few characters that makes it out alive. How do you feel about his character’s fate? Do you feel like it’s almost more of a punishment for him to still be alive with the way he is?

Lange: Yeah. I think the line is something like, she turns on a movie and he’s like, “If I can’t see it, I don’t want to hear it.” It is kind of a purgatory he’s left in. To say to her good luck like this is what
Here’s, what you made. Here’s the cake. Here’s the bed you’ve made, now go off and lay in it. I don’t know. I think it’s sort of a pathetic ending.

Jeff, you mentioned you meet a pretty gnarly fate in the final episode. I’d love to get your thoughts on the death scene and how was it to film getting your head ripped off?

Ward: It was crazy. It was a lot of prosthetics and a ton of time. Those few shots took many hours to do. It’s funny that you ask, because I remember when we were filming it, everybody was in these kind of white hazmat-looking suits because there was so much blood everywhere that it was just like anybody that was going in and out had to be wearing these white suits. At a certain point, when we were filming the actual head getting ripped off, there was a moment where everyone was just like, “Oh, it’s so exciting. Can you believe that your head is getting ripped off? Well, come on, we’re going to watch!” I was like, why is everyone this excited? Everyone’s very, very pleased to crowd around and watch my head get ripped off.

But it was, it was incredible, and I think it looks incredible. I love it because it’s such a violent and horrific ending, especially because he’s a movie star. It feels very shocking and very, you know, but also I love it because it’s like, as Eric was just saying, this is your bed you made. It’s not just that he dies. He gets ripped apart and eaten and decapitated in a way that mirrors back to his fault with his sister in a way that I think was a self-fulfilling prophecy just by being around Lisa so much. I think deep down he was trying to get that. But, yeah, it was a crazy thing to film, so much blood and a lot of reverse shots, but we did it as practically as we could. I think it came out looking really cool if horrifying.

Josephine Baker to Become First Black Woman Buried in Paris’ PanthĂ©on

0

The remains of Josephine Baker—the American-born French dancer, singer, actress, and activist who died in 1975—will be transferred to the PanthĂ©on in Paris, The New York Times reports. She’ll become the first Black woman and one of only a few foreign-born figures to be interred at the storied tomb. The PanthĂ©on is also the final resting place of icons including Marie Curie, Victor Hugo, Voltaire, and Jean-Jacques Rousseau. The funeral will take place on November 30.

President Emmanuel Macron reportedly came to the decision at the urging of a petition signed by over 40,000 people calling for the move. The Times noted the symbolic nature of the move. “How could a woman who came from a discriminated and very poor background achieve her destiny and become a world star,” the writer Laurent Kupferman, who started the petition, said. “That was possible in France at a time when it was not in the United States.”

Big Brother TV show on CBS: canceled or renewed for season 24?

(CBS)

How hot will things in the house get in the 23rd season of the Big Brother TV show on CBS? As we all know, the Nielsen ratings typically play a big role in determining whether a TV show like Big Brother is cancelled or renewed for season 24. Unfortunately, most of us do not live in Nielsen households. Because many viewers feel frustration when their viewing habits and opinions aren’t considered, we invite you to rate all of the 23rd season episodes of Big Brother here.

A CBS reality competition, Big Brother is hosted by Julie Chen Moonves and typically airs three nights a week — Wednesdays (veto), Thursdays (eviction), and Sundays. The 23rd season features an all-new group of players and will feature a flight attendant, make-up artist, start-up founder, farmer, kindergarten teacher, forensic scientist, and an attorney, among others. For the first time in the show’s history, the Houseguests will be presented with a double-or-nothing offer that may be too good to refuse. The players are Alyssa Lopez (24), Azah Awasum (30), Brent Champagne (28), Britini D’Angelo (24), Christian Birkenberger (23), Claire Rehfuss (25), Derek Frazier (29), Derek Xiao (24), Brandon “Frenchie” French (34), Hannah Chaddha (21), Kyland Young (29), Sarah Steagall (27), Tiffany Mitchell (40), Travis Long (22), Whitney Williams (30), and Xavier Prather (27). Big Brother follows a group of people living together in a house outfitted with 94 HD cameras and 113 microphones, recording their every move 24 hours a day. Each week someone is voted out of the house. The last remaining Houseguest wins the extra large grand prize of $750,000.

What do you think? Which season 23 episodes of the Big Brother TV series do you rate as wonderful, terrible, or somewhere between? Do you think that Big Brother should be cancelled or renewed for a 24th season on CBS? Don’t forget to vote, and share your thoughts, below.

Isaiah Rashad Can’t Stop Playing Himself

This is “Add to Queue,” our attempt to sort through the cacophony of music floating in the algorithmic atmosphere by consulting the experts themselves. Our favorite musicians tell us about their favorite music—the sad, the happy, the dinner party-y, the songs they want played at their funeral. In this edition, we speak with the rapper Isaiah Rashad. After taking a five-year hiatus following his critically-acclaimed 2016 album The Sun’s Tirade, the Chattanooga, Tennessee native is back with The House Is Burning. With features ranging from Lil Uzi Vert and Smino to Amindi and SZA, the project has all the right ingredients: introspection, addictive melodies, and sharp lyrics. Below, Rashad hopped on the phone with us to discuss what’s on his playlist—from Aretha Franklin and Erykah Badu to Oliver Tree and Outkast.

———

JULIANA UKIOMOGBE: What music were you listening to while making The House Is Burning?

ISAIAH RASHAD: Let me go to my playlist. Alright, I was listening to a gang of music: TiaCorine, Childish Major, Aretha Franklin, Willow Smith, and 42Dugg. It’s a weird smorgasbord.

UKIOMOGBE: Do you find it helpful to listen to music while you make your own or do you prefer to be in your own zone?

RASHAD: When I’m not listening to music, I’m probably at my unhealthiest. I feel more involved with my day when I listen to music because I don’t be sitting down and listening, unless I’m at a function or the homie’s crib. I’m usually on the go or in the car.

UKIOMOGBE: Are you a playlist-maker, or do you listen to albums straight though?

RASHAD: Straight through, especially if they’re made for that. Some albums just seem to be playlists themselves so I kind of pick off songs from them.

UKIOMOGBE: In your opinion, what album has zero skips? Something that you can play top to bottom and it’s flawless throughout.

RASHAD: The House is Burning. Actually, Ctrl [by SZA].

UKIOMOGBE: Who was the earliest musician to influence you?

RASHAD: Master P made me want to be a rapper.

UKIOMOGBE: What was the last song you listened to?

RASHAD: It was “haircut” by Amindi.

UKIOMOGBE: How do you find new music?

RASHAD: Friends’ suggestions, or whatever Spotify or Apple Music recommends me. I look at end-of-year lists. You know how you wait to binge? Sometimes I wait until the end of the year to see everybody’s lists tailored to different demographics. Some publications are super commercial and on others you can find some pure, untouched, underground shit that’s gonna be popular in three years. Throughout the year, I listen to whatever’s tight.

UKIOMOGBE: What artists have you recently discovered that you love?

RASHAD: Larry June, for sure.

UKIOMOGBE: What did your parents play music in the house? What did you listen to growing up?

RASHAD: Aretha Franklin, Whitney Houston, The Temptations—a lot of Motown stuff. Erykah Badu, Outkast. Almost anything popular from Louisiana. Gospel, too. I would definitely say my style is an amalgamation of most of my influences. With anything, if it’s not flat-out bad, I can find the good in it. I was listening to SpotemGottem the other day trying to figure out what’s going on with his flow, and I eventually figured out.

UKIOMOGBE: Do you remember the first CD you purchased?

RASHAD: It was 1991 by Azealia Banks.

UKIOMOGBE: What’s your favorite song off that project?

RASHAD: Hmmm, “212.” She has this crazy flow to me. I liked that “Van Vogue” shit, too. It was a short project. I don’t even want to talk about it. [Laughs] But I thought shawty was gonna be up there right now.

UKIOMOGBE: What was your first concert?

RASHAD: The Weeknd. That was the first one I paid to get into. I got fired the next day.

UKIOMOGBE: Wow, really?

RASHAD: Yeah, I was out too late. Couldn’t wake up. This was in 2011.

UKIOMOGBE: Got it. What would you put on a road trip playlist?

RASHAD: I have a playlist for that. It’s actually my everyday playlist. It’s pretty versatile. I’ll put it like this: I do an autumn, spring, and sometimes a summer playlist. I make these every year. Especially living in LA, it’s not a summer, spring, fall thing. It’ll just be randomly hot as fuck in February for two days. So, it just be spring or fall all year to me. I have four versions of this playlist. Right now, my spring playlist has things like “Atomic Dog” by George Clinton, “Certainly” by Erykah Badu, “You’re Dead” by Norma Tanega, “Flashlight” by Parliament, “Bam Bam” by Sister Nancy, “Murder She Wrote” by Chaka Demus, and “Cranes in the Sky” by Solange. I put this shit on shuffle. I got “Hey! Love” by The Delfonics on this motherfucker. “Doing The Best I Can” by James Brown is on there. This is a fire playlist. If you can’t tell, I listen to mostly old music. I’m in a good place. I don’t be gettin’ hype like other niggas do. I like listening to that stuff, but I don’t like for it to be my only go-to.

UKIOMOGBE: Do you set your playlist to private or public when you make them?

RASHAD: It’s all public. I don’t really use Spotify that much. The color waves throw me off.

UKIOMOGBE: Really? I use Spotify more than Apple.

RASHAD: It’s too complicated. It’s always inviting me to do something.

UKIOMOGBE: What music would you play at a house party?

RASHAD: My own.

UKIOMOGBE: What would you play at a dinner party?

RASHAD: My album.

UKIOMOGBE: Do you have a favorite movie soundtrack?

RASHAD: Probably Juno.

UKIOMOGBE: I’ve never heard that answer before.

RASHAD: I love Black people, too. [Laughs]

UKIOMOGBE: What’s your go-to breakup song?

RASHAD: “Damage” by Future.

UKIOMOGBE: What song would you use to describe yourself?

RASHAD: “Fall In Love (Your Funeral)” by Erykah Badu.

UKIOMOGBE: Why that song?

RASHAD: You gotta listen to it.

UKIOMOGBE: What was your first favorite song?

RASHAD: “Nice and Slow” by Usher. He’s originally from Chattanooga, so it’s a hometown thing. It’s the same reason why I think Samuel L. Jackson is a better actor than everybody else. It may not be true, but I’ll defend it ‘til my death.

UKIOMOGBE: What’s your favorite performance by him?

RASHAD: “The Hateful Eight.”

UKIOMOGBE: What’s your favorite music video of all time?

RASHAD: That Busta Rhymes/Janet Jackson shit. Or “Country Grammar.” Or “Player’s Ball” and “Prototype” by Outkast. I got so many. Damn, you asked me the wrong shit. But I’d say one of those.

UKIOMOGBE: What song always puts you in a good mood?

RASHAD: “Happy Feelin’s” by Frankie Beverly.

UKIOMOGBE: Do you listen to an artist that people may be surprised to know about?

RASHAD: What’s that nigga’s name with the bowl cut?

UKIOMOGBE: Oliver Tree?

RASHAD: Oliver Fucking Tree. I like his song “Cash Machine.”

UKIOMOGBE: If you were to pick a couple songs to play at your funeral, what would they be?

RASHAD: “by george” by myself. Actually, no. I’m not gonna get into the descriptions of how I want my funeral to go. One, I don’t want anyone to talk about how much they love me and all that type of shit. I want them to talk about the most memorable time they had with me. You know? At the apex of the funeral, I want Aretha Franklin’s “I Never Loved a Man” to play because I play that when I feel like shit. And I usually feel like a terrible guy. [Laughs] I’m just bullshittin,’ man.

UKIOMOGBE: Do you have a favorite TV show theme song?

RASHAD: Scrubs [Starts singing it]. I used to download the theme songs to different shows. Like, “These motherfuckers kinda hit.” I’m gonna go listen to that when we get off the phone.

UKIOMOGBE: Interesting. What’s a song that everybody should know about?

RASHAD: “Score,” by Isaiah Rashad.

UKIOMOGBE: Who’s your all-time dream collaborator?

RASHAD: Pharrell.

UKIOMOGBE: Is there an instrument that you’d love to learn how to play?

RASHAD: The heart. [Laughs] No, the piano.

UKIOMOGBE: What’s your sign?

RASHAD: Which one?

UKIOMOGBE: Sun.

RASHAD: Taurus.

UKIOMOGBE: Same. So, what song do you think encapsulates Taurus energy the best?

RASHAD: “Bitch Nigga Please” by 21 Savage.

UKIOMOGBE: Why?

RASHAD: You gotta listen. You’re a Taurus so you’ll understand as soon as you listen.

UKIOMOGBE: [Laughs] Right. Do you know your whole chart?

RASHAD: I know the whole shit.

UKIOMOGBE: What’s your moon and rising?

RASHAD: My moon is in Cancer and my ascendant is Virgo.

UKIOMOGBE: Nice. So, you’re going on tour this year. Which song from the album are you most excited to perform?

RASHAD: The first date is September 8th in Boston. And I can’t wait to perform “9-3 Freestyle.”

UKIOMOGBE: Why that one specifically?

RASHAD: Because it’s vulgar and the kids love that shit.

Amy Winehouse (Full) The Untold Story – Documentary Channel 5

32

With fans all over the world still struggling to come to terms with her death, a Channel 5 documentary reveals the full shocking truth about Amy Winehouse’s tortured private life.

Amy Winehouse: The untold story charts the rise and fall of this extraordinarily gifted but tragically flawed individual — and hears exclusively from her ex-husband Blake Fielder Civil, talking about their massive drug binges and their stormy relationship.

We hear from an ex-teacher, Amy’s former mum-in-law, reporters and photographers who followed her career, and finally a psychologist who talks about the many demons Amy ultimately failed to conquer.

There’s also, needless to say, a reminder of her amazing musical talent — one that catapulted her into a world it seems she just wasn’t equipped to cope with.
