Upcoming Star Trek Origin Film Premise Shows Why Franchise Keeps Losing Long-Time Fans

0

Paramount has struggled to get a Star Trek movie together since 2016’s Star Trek Beyond underperformed. Since then, the fourth (and likely final) Abramsverse film has been in development hell. As a result, it looks like the next Star Trek movie will be yet another origin story. The reasoning behind this is so that newcomers can have an entry point to the franchise that doesn’t require previous knowledge. Unfortunately, it does so at the cost of almost 70 years of fans who are tired of seeing Star Trek stuck in neutral.

We don’t need another Star Trek origin story

According to The Hollywood Reporter, the next Star Trek movie is a prequel that focuses on humanity’s first contact with aliens and how the Federation was formed. This origin story is rumored to take place predominantly on Earth, and (as mentioned above) the studio sees it as an entry point for new fans.

If the plans for this film pan out, it will be the fifth “entry-point” in the franchise, joining:

  • The Original Series
  • Star Trek: The Next Generation
  • Star Trek (2009)
  • Star Trek: Discovery

Aside from The Original Series, which didn’t have to worry about established canon, these were each touted as a way to introduce new fans to Star Trek without confusing them with decades of canon.

The Next Generation succeeded by placing the series 100 years ahead of the exploits of Kirk and Spock. Sure, there were plenty of references to The Original Series. Still, the writing was good enough to catch you up quickly, and the series wasn’t dependent on nostalgia to attract viewers.

Star Trek (2009) side-stepped canon entirely by creating a separate timeline, but not without making the horrible decision to blow up Romulus in the prime timeline.

Finally, Discovery blunt-forced its way into the canon with awkward cameos and retcons. Fortunately, the writers realized why The Next Generation’s formula worked and propelled Burnham and crew almost a thousand years into the future where they couldn’t do any more harm.

Even Star Trek: Picard, which was created entirely to lure in TNG fans, was incredibly afraid to tap into existing canon outside of a superficial level. The first two seasons introduced us to an absolutely nonsensical grimdark future, and managed to kill Data and several beloved secondary characters from previous series and ruin the Borg. However, in Season 3, Terry Matalas took over as showrunner and penned a love letter to The Next Generation, which, while flawed, is the sole instance that NuTrek has spoken directly to long-time fans. In return, Matalas generated massive support for a “Star Trek Legacy” spin-off, picking up the story where Picard ended.

When The Original Series was canceled after Season 3, the negative reaction was so severe that it essentially created the first fandom. Unfortunately, the Star Trek origin movie and the upcoming Starfleet Academy series indicate that those in charge of the franchise are obsessed with finding new fans instead of nurturing existing ones. Instead of pushing the franchise forward with a series rooted firmly in 70 years of canon by producing something like the proposed Star Trek Legacy, we’ll continue to get entry-level projects.

The future of Star Trek is looking bleak in a way it hasn’t since the cancellation of Enterprise. Strange New Worlds will likely wrap after Season 5 if it follows the pattern we’ve seen with Lower Decks and Discovery. With the sale of Paramount to Skydance, it’s up in the air as to whether any of the current plans for the franchise will come to fruition. The best-case scenario is that we get someone running that franchise who realizes that hitting rewind on Star Trek every 10 years isn’t the best way forward. In the worst case, we’ll see it go dormant again.

Martin Prequel Drama Series in Development From Martin Lawrence

0

Martin Lawrence is developing Young Martin, a prequel drama series to the beloved 1990s sitcom Martin.

Lawrence starred as the titular character in the award-winning sitcom, which ran from 1992 to 1997, spanning five seasons. The sitcom centered on the cocky radio and TV personality as he navigates life with his girlfriend Gina, who has to constantly put up with him and the trouble he and his best friends bring. Lawrence co-created the series alongside John Bowman and Topper Carew.

What to expect in Young Martin?

An homage to the original series, Young Martin — which is not yet attached to a network — will serve as a reimagining of the sitcom character. The series will be set in modern-day Detroit, following teenage Martin Payne as he balances adolescence and adulthood.

The synopsis (via Deadline) reads: “Young Martin follows Martin Payne, a spirited teenager whose journey is characterized by ambition, humor, and a genuine compassion for those around him. The show will explore themes of family, friendship and life while the young Payne balances on the tightrope between adolescence and adulthood. Martin’s quick wit and magnetic personality draw him into high-stakes situations, where he must confront obstacles, emotions, and ultimately, find his path to success.”

Lawrence, who can currently be seen on the big screen in Bad Boys: Ride or Die, will executive produce the project alongside RunTelDat’s Robert Lawrence and Stacy Lyles and WonderHill Studios’ Bob Yari, David McPherson, Rosa Peart, and Greg Martin.

Other details about the planned project are still under wraps, including the stars attached to the series. In addition to Lawrence, the original cast members include Tisha Campbell as Gina, Carl Anthony Payne II as Cole, Thomas Mikal Ford as Tommy, Tichina Arnold as Pam, Jon Gries as Shawn, and Garrett Morris as Stan.

Chicago post-punk trio Lifeguard have shared two new songs: “Ministry / Energie” and a cover of the Wipers’ 1980 classic “Telepathic Love.” Both were recorded in Los Angeles with No Age’s Randy Randall. They’re out now digitally, but will also come out on a 7″ vinyl record on October 25 via Matador. Check out both tracks below.

Next weekend, Lifeguard will perform at Pitchfork Music Festival in Chicago, Illinois. Also slated to play the same day as the trio are Jamie xx, Carly Rae Jepsen, Unwound, De La Soul, Bratmobile, Wednesday, Hotline TNT, and many more. Tickets are still available.

Last year, Lifeguard made their Matador debut with the five-song Dressed in Trenches and bundled that EP with 2022’s Crowd Can Talk EP. That same year, they teamed up with fellow Chicago indie-rock locals Horsegirl—whose guitarist, Penelope Lowenstein, is the older sister of Lifeguard drummer Isaac Lowenstein—to cover the Stone Roses single “I Wanna Be Adored” for Unacceptable Color.

What Happened to Joe Kessler?

0

In The Boys Season 4 Episode 6, titled “Dirty Business,” Hughey, Starlight, Marvin, and Kimiko sneak into Tek Knight’s mansion after learning that the latter is planning something big with Homelander and Sister Sage. Meanwhile, Butcher continues to torture Sameer with the apparent help of Joe Kessler, leading to some shocking revelations for fans. So, here is the ending of The Boys Season 4 Episode 6 explained with details on what happened to Joe.

What happened at the end of The Boys Season 4 Episode 6?

In Episode 6, during their break-in, Hughie pretends to be a Supe named Webweaver and is soon placed on a BDSM contraption by Tek Knight. Ashley (Colby Minifie) arrives later, and together with Tek Knight, puts Hughie through a harrowing and traumatic experience, believing him to be Webweaver. Meanwhile, the other members of The Boys realize that something is wrong. Marvin shoots Sister Sage in the head. Although she survives because of her powers, the temporary but severe brain damage she suffered nearly costs Homelander the support of powerful people from Washington for his coup against the President-elect, Robert Singer. Fortunately for Homelander, Victoria Neuman (Claudia Doumit) steps in and salvages the situation.

Marvin suffers a panic attack, and A-Train takes him to the hospital, continuing his transformation into a true hero. Annie and Kimiko rescue Hughie and force Tek Knight with Laddio’s help to reveal that Homelander wants to use his prisons as internment camps for dissdants. Eventually, Tek Knight is killed by Elijah, the man who raised him.

The following day, Firecracker tells Homelander about the break-in and Tek Knight’s death. She also reveals that she can now lactate because of “a long regimen of drugs,” immediately drawing Homelander’s interest.

Elsewhere, Butcher continues to torture Sameer, who reveals that they can’t make the Supe-killing virus strong enough to kill Homelander because it then changes and becomes airborne and highly contagious. It can even potentially wipe out all the Supes in the world.

As Butcher realizes the implication of that, Kessler seems unsettlingly happy with the prospect of causing mass death. Becca, who Butcher knows is a hallucination, passionately argues against whatever Kessler says. But the moment Kessler addresses her, Butcher realizes that he is also a hallucination, caused by the ever-growing tumor in his brain.

Is the real Joe Kessler alive or dead in The Boys Season 4?

As the Kessler that Butcher’s mind created reveals, the real Joe Kessler died in Panjshir Valley in northeastern Afghanistan after Butcher left him behind. Although Butcher initially refuses to believe this, he realizes that it’s the truth.

Will Billy Butcher kill all supes in The Boys Season 4 or 5?

While it remains unknown whether Butcher will attempt to kill all Supes, The Boys Season 4 Episode 6 shows that there is a clash between good and evil inside Butcher’s mind. The hallucination of Becca represents the humanity and morality that remains in Butcher, while Kessler is the part that wants to burn the world down in his pursuit of revenge.

Although Butcher does care about the Supe members of his team, it’s ultimately with Ryan that the last traces of his sanity are anchored. Now that Butcher knows that something is immensely wrong with him even beyond the tumor, he can course-correct and focus on his goal of getting Ryan back. Alternatively, he can become one of the main antagonists in Seasons 4 and 5, especially if something happens to Ryan.
