Young Thug’s Lyrics Can be Entered as Evidence in YSL RICO Trial, Judge Rules

0

Fulton County Superior Court Judge Ural Glanville has ruled that some of Young Thug ’s lyrics may be entered into evidence during his upcoming criminal trial, Billboard reports. The ruling is the latest development in the state’s ongoing case against Young Thug and members of his Young Stoner Life (YSL) network for alleged criminal activity. Pitchfork has reached out to Thug’s legal representatives for comment.

Young Thug, Gunna, Yak Gotti, and several of their YSL associates were arrested in May 2022 on charges of gang-related activity and conspiring to violate Georgia’s Racketeer Influenced and Corrupt Organizations (RICO) Act. Thug was hit with seven additional felony charges shortly after the initial indictment was released.

Both Gunna and Young Thug were denied bond multiple times before the DS4Ever rapper was eventually released from jail after pleading guilty to one count of conspiracy to violate the RICO Act. In June of last year, Gunna released a statement addressing his incarceration, saying: “My art is not allowed to stand alone as entertainment, I’m not allowed that freedom as a Black Man in America.”

Judge Glanville’s ruling was entered today after a hearing debating the use of lyrics as evidence in the case that took place on Wednesday, November 8. According to Billboard, Thug’s legal representative, Brian Steel, condemned the use of lyrics in this context, saying, “They are targeting the right to free speech, and that’s wrong. They are saying that just because he his singing about it, he is now part of a crime.”

Prosecutor Michael Carson reportedly argued, however, that relevant lyrics amount to “proclamations of violence” by alleged YSL members. “People can look at that indictment and see one thing that’s for sure not fantasy: People are dead,” he reportedly stated.

Prosecutor Symone Hylton also reportedly detailed specific examples of Young Thug lyrics during the Wednesday hearing, pointing to the rapper’s 2016 song “Slime Shit” and 2018’s “Anybody.” Hylton alleged that both songs reference actual crimes, claiming that the “Slime Shit” line “hundred rounds in a Tahoe” is a nod to the 2015 death of Donovan Thomas Jr.; Yak Gotti and four others were charged with murder in connection to the incident, per the original indictment.

The Penguin Release Date Window Delayed for The Batman Spin-off

0

The Colin Farrell-led Max series The Penguin has had its release date delayed ahead of its intended spring 2024 debut.

Deadline has revealed that the show‘s original spring 2024 launch has been pushed back as a result of the WGA and ongoing SAG-AFTRA strikes. Reporting on the Max 2024 Slate Preview, entertainment critic Meghan O’Keefe posted to Twitter stating that The Penguin was indeed delayed and is now set to come out in the fall season of 2024, further confirming that this is the result of this year’s entertainment industry strikes.

Set in the world of the 2022’s The Batman, The Penguin will focus on Oswald Cobblepot’s past and show his rise to power in Gotham’s seedy underbelly rather than portray him as the established kingpin. The character has a rich history of live-action appearances, as Danny DeVito famously played Penguin in Batman Returns while Robin Lord Taylor portrayed him in Gotham.

Who is writing The Penguin?

The limited drama is based on the DC characters created by Bob Kane and Bill Finger. It is being written by Lauren LeFranc, who is also set as the showrunner. The first two episodes will be directed by Craig Zobel. Joining Farrell are Rhenzy Feliz, Cristin Milioti, Michael Zegen, Michael Kelly, Shohreh Aghdashloo, Deirdre O’Connell, Clancy Brown, James Madio, Scott Cohen, Francois Chau, Carmen Ejogo, and David H. Holmes. It is also rumored that Robert Pattinson might make an appearance as Bruce Wayne/ Batman.

It is executive produced by The Batman’s Dylan Clark and Matt Reeves, Farrell, LeFranc, Daniel Pipski, Adam Kassanand, and Rafi Crohn. It is a joint project between 6th and Idaho, DC Entertainment, Dylan Clark Productions, and Warner Bros. Television.

Top Three Horror Films of All Time

0

Horror films are the staples of American cinema enjoyed by millions worldwide. It touches the places we are scared to admit while alone at night, slowly eating our popcorn while looking over our shoulders for that imaginary killer. Jump scares and dramatic music crescendo to scary scenes that stay burnt onto our brains for years, navigating our twisted thoughts and fears through dark October nights! Here are my top three of all time.

Halloween

Halloween night 1963, little Michael Myers executed Judith his teenage sister. He gets locked up for over a decade. On October 30, 1978, while being transferred – adult Michael Myers escaped from Smith’s Grove asylum. Upon returning to Haddonfield, Illinois, the place of his birth – he stalked his next victims.

John Carpenter’s classic horror picture was possibly the standard for American Horror cinema. Jamie Lee Curtis became the model for scary movie heroine. The tall, masked man will forever make one check their surroundings on velvet, Autumn nights, during of course the Halloween season.

The Exorcist

One of the most prolific horror movies of all time. A story of an exorcism based on actual events. Regan played by Linda Blair began acting strangely. She started levitating and speaking in demonic tongues. Her fearful mother played by Ellen Burstyn sought medical help but hit a dead end. A local DC priest, surmised the young girl must be under the control of the devil.

The priest recommends an exorcism, and the Catholic church sends out an expert in the field of demonology played by Max von Sydow – to help take on the difficult job of saving the young girl from Satan’s grasp. The Curse of the Exorcist might actually be scarier than the film itself – google it!

The Shining

Jack Torrance – played by critically acclaimed actor Jack Nicholson took a job as a winter caretaker at the Overlook Hotel in Colorado, to solve his severe writer’s block. He along with his wife, Wendy played by Shelley Duvall, and their son, Danny Lloyd, plagued by psychic premonitions. Unfortunately, Jack’s writing stalled and Danny’s visions became more disturbing, Jack discovered the dark secrets of the hotel and dove into insanity unraveling into a homicidal maniac whose only goal is to kill his family.

1881

Established in 1936.

Now owned by the previous owner of Lucky Baldwin’s and now the same owners as the Altadena Ale & Wine House, who pride themselves on serving quality craft cocktails and fine beer, Champagne, and Wines.

The owner Gail says,” We are the owners of the Altadena Ale & Wine House. We pride ourselves in extending the community, embracing intelligent conversations, and serving the finest products!”

One customer Mike Jobes left a review saying,

“1881 for jazz on a Friday night was fantastic!
A $10 cover provided fabulous music for three hours from 8:30 p.m. to 11:30 p.m. On our particular night, we had a trio of drums, guitar, and bass. Street parking was plentiful and free. The bathrooms were clean. I appreciated the quick turnaround on drinks, loved my amaretto sour, and my friends loved their selections. Our tables were regularly bussed. Strangers sat next to each other. Outside food is welcome but I didn’t see anybody bring anything in. No particular dress code is enforced as far as I
could tell. After the show, the Pasadena nightlife is just a short drive away. A dazzling night- I’d love to be back soon!”

The Lighthouse Cafe

The club began showcasing jazz music on May 29, 1949, when owner John Levine permitted bassist/band leader Howard Rumsey to initiate a recurring Sunday jam session. It was successful. Rumsey became club manager and pieced together a house band called the Lighthouse All-Stars. The club also hosted visiting well-known groups, the Lighthouse All-Stars became a noted ensemble, which included Chet Baker, Gerry Mulligan, and Miles Davis.

A short stroll from the ocean – the club is a Jazz staple in the Hermosa beach area and the city of Los Angeles. If you are by the South Bay, stop in for some great Jazz and some Pacific Coast ocean air. You just can’t beat it!

The club experienced legendary artists and newcomers alike. Maintaining a respectable music legacy, Catalina Jazz Club has been honored by the city, the California Jazz Foundation, the Los Angeles Jazz Society as well as others. It turns 37-year old later in the fall

Industry Café and Jazz

Industry Café is an Ethiopian restaurant in Culver City, which hosts live jazz performances, spoken-word poetry slams, and open mic nights on their sidewalk patio. While here, you can order beef tips, Doro wot, Collard greens, or a platter of all three on a bed of soft Injera.

Great food, fantastic vibe, excellent music. We were visiting from. Wisconsin and our kids were able to order off the classic menu (burger, spaghetti, and chicken wings). My husband I enjoyed delicious Ethiopian fare. The owner brought out some samples and my seven-year-old was hooked on the bread and lentils. He’s pretty picky, so this was great. The music was wonderful and was just the right level so that we could talk, but the kids weren’t annoying to other patrons. 100% recommend.
