My Five top Christmas Songs

0

One of the things I love about Christmas is the music. I never hear those holy sounds throughout the year – but during the Holiday season, it’s in full rotation like a personal soundtrack to that special day – when we celebrate the birth of Christ and x mas sales that fill store windows. While I’m in those stores – eagerly shopping – those classic Christmas hits – massage my ears with feel-good hymns. These are my top five!

1. Vince Guaraldi Trio– A Charlie Brown Christmas

A Charlie Brown Christmas is an annual TV classic. It has not diminished over time and the power of its soundtrack is still very relevant. Jazz pianist Vince Guaraldi captures almost every emotion Christmas will inspire, from childhood wonders on skating ice to the sadness that weaves into its seasonal theme song. Usually, people’s preferences for Christmas music tends to be more deeply personal bound memories and family traditions, but the tunes on A Charlie Brown Christmas places everyone beneath its tree skirt with the gift – cause the music is a gift for you and me. It is sophisticated and raw as a grammar school nativity play, but even more captivating.

2.The Beach Boys – The Beach Boys’ Christmas Album

The Beach Boys’ Christmas Album was recorded as Brian Wilson got hot – he taped around the same time as the groups awesome album The Beach Boys Today! On side one Wilson’s originals stand the test of time and is definitely star studded with diamond cuts: Merry Christmas, Baby and Christmas Day exhibit how great a song writer he was, bringing Christmas to the beach. Even Santa needs a tan!

3. Rotary Connection – Peace

This Christmas album could be listened to throughout the year. Psychedelic soul probably had all the elves tripping on LSD. But the Holiday season and narcotics don’t mix – do they? This collection of songs is packed with adventurous orchestrations; given to us by producer Charles Stepney which includes Hendrix guitar riffs and Minnie Riperton’s classic voice. It’s a 60’s Christmas – yeah baby!

4. Elvis Presley – Elvis’ Christmas Album

The first, and best, of Elvis’s holiday attempts, recorded during Presley’s early, rockabilly years. You must hear the intense, opener, Santa Claus Is Back in Town as evidence of the songs staying power. Surprise, there’s a gospel tune along with a playlist of masterful ballads. His version of I’ll Be Home for Christmas is genuinely heartbreaking. Elvis probably never got coal in his stocking!

5. A LaFace Family Christmas

Baby Face’ s masterful compilation took its place in history by featuring Outkast’s first ever track ever released by the hip hop duo – Player’s Ball. A song about a Christmas day of a harassed drug dealer. It is an undisputable classic hit, Followed by TLC’s All I Want for Christmas and of course Toni Braxton’s diva-ish take on The Christmas Song. A LaFace holiday album? How could you go wrong? Christmas in the A! A – Town where Santa wears those 22s.

Top Five Off-the-Wall Christmas Events in L.A.

0

I tried to find alternative events one might love during the Holiday season in the city that has no seasons. It’s true! I scoured the city to find some of the most off-the-wall events that might be left off the old holiday bucket list. We all need to open our minds and try new things. So, try these events that might make your holiday season a little more exciting in the city that sleeps by 9.

Marina Del Rey Boat Parade

It’s like you found a small-town fishing village during the Marina Del Rey Boat Parade. Gather around Fisherman’s Village or Burton Chace Park to watch as about 70 boats sail through the marina with holiday lights and decorations in competition. The sailors go against one another in categories such as Best Theme, Best Animation, Best Band, Best Lights, and more. The pre-parade kicks off at 5:55(angel number) pm with amazing fireworks, and the boat parade starts at 6 pm. Don’t be late or you will be on the naughty list!

Yuletide Cinemaland

Street Food Cinema has put together a series of outdoor holiday screenings in the Heritage Square which is the closest thing to an old English square in L.A. In the mists between Victorian home tours, piano sing-alongs, pleasureful strolls through a light tunnel, drinking hot chocolate, wine and craft beer, you can sneak a peek at screenings of films (showing twice each night, typically at 6 and 8 pm) like Elf, Home Alone, Scrooged, The Muppet Christmas Carol and more. If you miss this awesome event – Bah Humbug on you….

Holiday Time at Disneyland

When the Halloween pumpkins disappear from Main Street, the holidays take over at Disneyland. The world-famous theme park morphs into the merriest place on earth for a sixty days (Nov 10–Jan 7), with Christmas makeovers of popular rides and holiday-themed nighttime shows. As far as Christmas lights go, you’ll spot festive decor all over the parks, from the auto-themed Americana decorations in Cars Land to icicle lights draped atop Sleeping Beauty Castle. But the real standout is international hit It’s a Small World. Heads up – you’ll need to a reservation – so get to it or you might be left under the tree.

L.A. County Holiday Celebration

Celebrate a Christmas Eve at the Dorothy Chandler Pavilion. Get your friends and family and listen to L.A.’s biggest holiday show, which includes more than 20 choirs, music ensembles, and dance troupes from all over the city. The free three-hour show celebrates L.A.’s multicultural observation of the holidays with everything from an all-women soul ensemble to Hawaiian music to Indian dance.

‘Home Alone’ in Concert

Reserve a seat for the upcoming special screening of Home Alone at the Walt Disney Concert Hall. The Los Angeles Philharmonic is bringing the classic to life and performing John Williams’s score live to picture in an immersive experience, conducted by David Newman. I don’t know if Macaulay Culkin will be there, he might be… you know…Home Alone!

My Top Five Donut Places in LA

0

Donut Man

Expect to make a mess when eating the Donut Man’s famous strawberry and peach doughnuts. Each one is made by slicing a glazed doughnut in half and stuffing it to the brim with fruit. Since 1972, this modest shop has operated 24 hours a day out of Glendora, and during regular hours in Grand Central Market.

Mochinut

Mochinut is perfect for Los Angeles. With locations sprinkled throughout the region, this shop specializes in Korean rice flour hot dogs, bubble tea, soft serve, and mochi doughnuts. The latter originated in Hawaii by combining traditional doughnuts with mochi.

Big Jim’s Donuts

Big Jim’s Donuts developed regulars over the decades by making great traditional doughnuts while remaining open 24 hours a day. The shop sits on an iconic street corner, directly across the street from LA staple Pioneer Chicken. This classic East LA spot does far more than glazed and apple fritters, staff also make breakfast sandwiches, elote, and more.

Sidecar Donuts

Sidecar makes doughnuts throughout the day at all six LA locations, so the possibility of warm fritters is likely on every visit. The entire menu is worth trying, but the cakey huckleberry doughnut is the standout.

Colorado Donuts

Folks travel from all corners of SoCal to visit Colorado Donuts. Though this Eagle Rock doughnut maker fries up consistently solid traditional doughnuts, don’t overlook the ones decorated with the latest movie characters or a fluffy raised doughnut stuffed with Twix bars in the display case.

NEXT TOP FIVE MUSICAL DOCUMENTARIES

0

Here we are. Back again with the next top five of my favorite Musical Documentaries or like I say Rock Docs. These are five films I enjoyed about artists we hardly got to know, with the exception of the Talking Heads. From Marvin Gaye to Kurt Cobain and everyone in between. I love it when the camera goes backstage and goes into the lives of singers who left the Earth too early, but at least we have them on tape! Check out my top five musical documentaries.

AMY

Indie Wire says: “A powerful, moving documentary on the short but electrifying life of British singer-songwriter Amy Winehouse. “An extraordinary, powerful work” Asif Kapadia director of the doc features retro footage of the culturally influential singer Amy Winehouse. This particular piece of art includes interviews with Lauren Gilbert, Mitchell Winehouse, Janis Winehouse, Raye Cosbert, Tyler James, Pete Doherty, Tony Bennett, and many more. “Confessional with punchlines” – is how the singer described her songwriting abilities. Asif Kapadia’s melancholy film explores her short, explosive life. Winehouse’s own songs narrate the story, which is more like a diary than the average documentary. The beautifully sad life of a great artist who definitely died too young and will bring you into the micro existence of maybe one of the top female crooners of all time. Well, if you missed her life, you can catch her film – Amy.

KURT AND COURTNEY

After rocker Kurt Cobain’s death was ruled a suicide, a film crew landed in Seattle to shoot a documentary. Director Nick Broomfield engages the many people who existed in Kurt’s life. Cobain’s aunt gives her own home movies and recordings. The estranged father of Cobain’s widow Courtney Love, an L.A. private investigator who worked for Love, a nanny for Kurt and Courtney’s child, friends and lovers of both. Although Love won’t talk to the filmmaker or answer his inquiries – he comes to believe the coroner’s verdict. The documentary portrays the singer as a shy, slight, man tired of touring, hates fame, and loves heroin. It also shows an out-going Courtney who comes off as dramatic, controlling, elevating from groupie to star. The short life of Kurt Cobain is put front and center with this explosively, informative documentary, diving into the life and relationship of a legendary singer who brought a grudge to the masses. How did he really die? Only Courtney knows and that might be the problem.

STOP MAKING SENSE, THE TALKING HEADS CONCERT FILM

Jonathan Demme’s work of art is widely known as one of the best concert/music documentaries of all time, winning the National Society of Film Critics award for best non-fiction film in 1984. It was shot during four nights of concerts at Hollywood’s Pantages Theatre. Stop Making Sense includes performances of the first Talking Heads single, “Psycho Killer” (1977), through to their most recent hit at the time, “Burning Down the House” (1983). It also includes songs from the solo career of frontman David Byrne and  Tom Tom Club, the side project of the drummer and bassist, Chris Frantz and Tina Weymouth.

The band raised $1.2 million to make the movie themselves. The four main members of Talking Heads are joined by singers Lynn Mabry and Edna Holt, the guitarist Alex Weir, the keyboardist Bernie Worrell, and the percussionist Steve Scales.

Stop Making Sense is a cult classic. It used early digital audio techniques which were innovative for the time. In 2021, it was selected for preservation in the United States National Film Registry by the Library of Congress – David Ritz

WHAT’S GOING ON?

In 1984, Marvin Gaye left behind one of the great American, musical legacies. A superb vocalist and subtle composer, Gaye was a visionary who expressed the tenor of his times. He was both radical and romantic, a self-taught singer with a flair for saying what was authentically true, he thrived on confession and loved being true to himself. His unique talent of turning the listener into a secret friend, of making one absorbed in his immediate presence. Marvin’s aura combined with his spiritual and sensual essences made him one of the most memorable singers/writers of all time. His music worked wonders but in his personal life, they clashed. Marvin Gaye translated his complex life into beautiful music. This beautiful life is put on film for all to see.

SUPERSTAR

The producers of Jesus Christ Superstar, filmed “Superstars”, a feature-length documentary about the BTS of the original “Jesus Christ Superstar” theatrical movie. The 90-minute documentary features making of footage and interviews with cast members and Norman Jewison. In 1972, director Jewison took a group of young thespians, singers, and dancers to war-ravaged Israel to shoot the adaptation of the hit rock opera “Jesus Christ Superstar.” The production team put together a new expanded digital cut of the original documentary “Superstars.” The original 2015, 52 min feature is being expanded to 90 min with an additional chapter of the film cast reunion in New York City and unseen footage of one of the cast members, Barry Dennen, who played “Pontius Pilate” retelling his experiences before and after filming in Israel. One of my favorite Rock Operas and a must-see! If you liked the movie, you will love the doc!
