Listen to an Exclusive Track from The Stranger Soundtrack

ComingSoon is pleased to offer an exclusive peek at The Stranger soundtrack featuring music by composer, cellist, and electronic musician Oliver Coates (Aftersun). The film is now streaming on Netflix and the soundtrack will be available on October 21. The score utilizes electronics and strings to provide a forbidding, rhythmic backdrop to the unsettling film that illustrates the secretive friendship between two strangers.

“The director Thomas M Wright sent me a recording of an Australian underpass at night, the sound of vehicles passing overheard,” says Coates. “There was a physicality, breath, and silence in the sound. I started sending him quick sketches based on breathy dark string loops against his field recording and we worked for the next 8 months on The Stranger, before the shoot, and throughout the edit. We wanted the musical language to keep pressure on the rhythm of the film, and to stay terse in the motifs. It is dark but fast-moving like an escaping dream. There is a build-up of unbearable tension, in a film without any violence at all – then the last 15 minutes are a wide outpouring of the emotions stored in the body, a flood of tonal music, reversed basslines on strings and cascading harmonics.”

“A friendship forms between two strangers. For Henry Teague (Sean Harris), worn down by a lifetime of physical labor, this is a dream come true,” says the synopsis of the film. “His new friend Mark (Joel Edgerton) becomes his savior and ally. However, neither is who they appear to be, each carry secrets that threaten to ruin them – and in the background, one of the nation’s largest police operations is closing in.”

New Artist Spotlight: Synth Pop Veteran Jenn Vix Adds Trap to Her Repertoire, Making EDMers Take Notice [Video] {NSFW]

Let’s get one thing straight: the indie synth pop mainstay that is Jenn Vix is only new to the moden EDM aesthetic. Nearly virtuosic on the synths and bass and a post punk-style lyricist, Vix has been producing goth-edged music since 1995 and is well-recognized for her work in the larger music scene. Having worked with some of the best-known indie stars and producers of the 80s, including members of The Cure, The Psychedelic Furs and Adam and the Ants, her debut self-titled solo album in 1995 received notice from Rolling Stone and has post punk and post rock cachet for miles. Shes been releasing ever since, racking up even more accolades whilst staying true to her synthy style.

The tandem tricks to good post punk, if Joy Division, Nick Cave and Tom Waits are anything to go by, is haunting vocals and stark, striking lyrics. Outside of that, the genre is as diverse as its often partner, synth wave. Jenn Vix has a good hold on both of these post punk necessities, with her early work conjuring Sioxsie Sioux-meets-New Order. Her music has changed with the times and become even more synthy through her three full-lenghth albums, three EPs and coundless singles and collabs, landing somewhere between synthwave, indie pop and EDM.

Vix’s latest single, “Mr. Strange” combines all these styles and adds a trap beat, making it her first obvious bridge between indie pop and EDM, vintage and modern. The stark vocals, however, show she’s still not pulling any lyrical punches. While the hip hop-inspired trap beat flickers around darkwave-style synths, Vix’s vocals are bold as brass : it’s about a relationship with a sex doll. In case anyone was going to misinterpret, the video makes it crystal clear (NSFW).

While the outward point of the song and video are clear, “Mr. Strange” also speaks to some larger issues in society and sexuality that are a bit more open to interpretation. Similar to the flim Lars and the Real Girl, there’s an aura of disconnection and the potential for lonliness to push an innocent interest into something more real. Blowup dolls or not, with so much of our lives being lived online nowadays and the added forced separation of the pandemic, the need for connection can take a turn into the realm of fetish or obsession.

These other, non-human forms of connection can also be tools for those who are working through trauma, and there’s a hint of that in “Mr. Strange,” as well as a feminist vibe, a’la women taking conrtol of their sexuality and the empowerment behind there. For a track that’s so lyrically stark and obvious, there’s still a lot to think about. That may be Vix’s most important gift: there are a lot of talented musicians out there, but a message that gets people thinking, especially in times like these, is what makes artist likes Vix stand out.

It will be interesting to see if Vix continues to push into EDM more with her next releases. Her most recent tracks before have sort of toggled back and forth between synthwave rock and trap/breakbeat. She’s definiely worth a look for the EDM fan who enjoys indie electro and syntwave, and no matter what direction she heads in next, fans can rest assured she’s not stopping any time soon and whatever she comes up with will be interesting, intense and a bit “strange.”

Black Adam BTS Image Reveals Appearance by Peacemaker Character

It’s no secret that the upcoming Black Adam film will feature various cameos from other DC characters. Thanks to a new behind-the-scenes shot, we now know one of those will be someone from HBO’s Peacemaker.

In a new behind-the-scenes shot from the upcoming film, Jennifer Holland, who plays A.R.G.U.S. agent Emilia Harcourt in Peacemaker, can be seen standing next to Aldis Hodge’s Hawkman and Pierce Brosnan’s Doctor Fate. Just what she’s doing in the film is unknown as of now, but thankfully fans won’t have to wait too long to figure it out.

Black Adam features the introduction of Dwayne Johnson as Teth-Adam or the titular anti-hero, whose background story was first teased during 2019’s Shazam! This marks the character’s live-action debut after only appearing in animated shows and films such as Young Justice.

Joining Johnson is Pierce Brosnan as Doctor Fate, Noah Centineo as Atom Smasher, Quintessa Swindell as Cyclone, and Aldis Hodge as Hawkman. Other cast members include Sarah Shahi, Marwan Kenzari, James Cusati-Moyer, Bodhi Sabongui, Mo Amer, and Uli Latukefu in undisclosed roles.

Based on the DC Comics character created by Otto Binder and C.C. Beck, the film is directed by Jaume Collet-Serra (The Shallows, Jungle Cruise) from a screenplay written by Rory Haines and Sohrab Noshiryani. Producers are Johnson, Dany Garcia, and Hiram Garcia of Seven Bucks Productions along with FlynnPicturesCo’s Beau Flynn, with Scott Sheldon overseeing the project for FlynnPictureCo.

Watch Animal Collective Cover Silver Jews’ “Trains Across the Sea”

Animal Collective have recorded a new session for SiriusXMU, where they played a live version of the Silver Jews song “Trains Across the Sea.” The track first appeared on Silver Jews’ 1994 debut, Starlite Walker; in the session, Animal Collective spliced it with live favorite “Genie’s Open,” which has not officially been released. Watch it happen below.

In clips that have not been shared online, they also performed their Time Skiffs cuts “Prester John” and “Passer-by,” as well as “Bluish” from Merriweather Post Pavilion. Animal Collective issued Time Skiffs early this year, following their 2018 full-length Tangerine Reef. In 2019, the band shared Ballet Slippers—a live record pieced together from four Merriweather Post Pavilion-era sets.

The band was meant to head out on a European tour in support of Time Skiffs next month, but had to cancel the trek due to everything from “inflation, to currency devaluation, to bloated shipping and transportation costs, and much much more,” they said. In May, they had to call off a number of concerts after Avey Tare and Deakin tested positive for COVID-19.
