‘I was stuck between loving him and letting him go, and I wasn’t sure how fair that was to either of us.’

First off, the cover of this book drew us in immediately! It called to us with a promise of passion, angst and emotion, and The Last Goodbye certainly delivered on those fronts.

‘I love you more than words, I love you more than touches, I’ll love you ‘till the end of time.’

This is an emotionally charged second chance love story that spans from teenage years to the heartbreak and challenges of adulthood. This is a story that deals with many ups and downs and delves into the loyalty of a man would lose so much to protect the ones he loves.

‘I never would’ve thought all of those years ago loving him would hurt this much.’

Lola and Lincoln were soulmates. We felt that from the instant they met when Lola was merely 15. The author conveyed the connection between the two that would carry the story through their loving yet heartbreaking and tumultuous marriage and the damage Linc caused by seemingly putting his brothers’ needs before his wife’s, thus making her feel second to Lincs love and priorities.

“Can I ask you something?”
“Always.”
“Would you change anything if you could?”

We must admit it took us a little while to really get lost in this story and we’re so glad we hung in there – how could we not? We had to uncover the reasons for both Linc and Lola’s actions. Some of which nearly brought us to tears. Here was a couple who belonged together – theirs really was two hearts that beat as one. Surely, despite everything, they would find their way back. We hoped so.

“I feel like somehow I failed to let you know how much I love you.”

Abby McCarthy spins an angsty offering of family devotion, soulmate love and the devastations one’s past can have on their present and future. We really enjoyed this story; however, we didn’t quite experience the heart-stopping emotion we had anticipated. There were moments of true emotion, but they didn’t quite hit the spot as we’d expected.

Once we found our stride we couldn’t look away and committed ourselves to Lola and Lincoln’s journey which had a bit of suspense thrown in to keep us on our toes. We were treated to an epilogue that was a beautifully fitting end to their love story, and it’s one that touched our hearts.

“You made promises to me too, remember? Love, honor, cherish.”
