Featured in TIR Episode 169, Part 1 of 2 (see Part 2 here ): R&B, funk and hip-hop vocalist Val Young. Having worked with George Clinton and Roy Ayers, she spent several years during the 1980s recording and performing with the Gap Band. She can be heard on that group’s smash hits including “Early in the Morning,” “You Dropped a Bomb on Me,” “Outstanding” and “Burn Rubber.”

During the latter part of that decade she connected with Rick James and released two solo albums, Seduction and Private Conversations. She can also be heard on several James songs as well as those by protege acts such as the Mary Jane Girls, including “In My House.”

For the past three decades, Young has kept very backing artists such as Bobby Womack, Teena Marie, Dr. Dre, Evelyn “Champagne” King, Snoop Dogg, Gerald Levert, 2Pac, El Debarge, Charlie Wilson, Teddy Riley and many others. Most recently she has been involved in a revival of the Mary Jane Girls.
