Spotify Disabled Auto-Shuffle on Albums, All Thanks to Adele

0

Spotify has disabled auto-shuffle on albums, and we have Adele to thank for it. Before Friday, shuffle was the streaming platform’s default setting when a user listened to an album. But after the release of the pop star’s powerful new album, 30, that is no longer the case. You can still listen to an album on shuffle if you wish, but you’ll have to do it manually.

“This was the only request I had in our ever changing industry,” Adele tweeted, revealing she was responsible for the change. “We don’t create albums with so much care and thought into our track listing for no reason. Our art tells a story and our stories should be listened to as we intended. Thank you Spotify for listening.”

It shouldn’t be too surprising that this generation’s queen of soul was able to get Spotify to change a key feature of its platform. She did, after all, recently break its single-day streaming record (along with Amazon Music’s) with the release of her latest single “Easy on Me.”

In SPIN‘s review of the new album, Bobby Olivier writes: “30 is an affecting, nuanced and bravely presented return for the star, at times painfully intimate in its display of deep, very adult wounds not easily healed.” Read the full review here.

Layoff Pies Gives Free Pies To Laid Off Journalists

It has been a difficult year.

It has not been a banner year for journalists, between the Bloomberg layoffs and the HuffPo layoffs and the layoffs at WNYC and Medium and Vice. Nick Robins-Early cannot change that. What he can do is bake them pies.

“Hey everybody, I’m starting a pie company and (hopefully) annual tradition,” Robins-Early tweeted yesterday. “If you’re a journalist who got laid off in 2021 come pick up a free thanksgiving pie this Saturday or Wednesday at the opening of the Layoff Pies shop.” It is a kindness born of empathy: Robins-Early had been among the HuffPo casualties himself. For anyone who wants a pie but has a job, he’ll be taking preorders. “Come get pie and help me find out whether this is a wildly bad idea!”

The pies — both free and paid for — will be available for preorder by Instagram DM. Pickups will be at the Lower East Side pop-up space Sommwhere (15 Essex Street) on Saturday, November 20 (12 p.m.–8 p.m.) and on Wednesday, November 24 (1:30 p.m. to 9 p.m.). It will be a pie shop but also a place “for people to come through and hang out.”

Grub was intrigued. Was Robins-Early, who covers extremism and online disinformation, pivoting to pies? With two days to go before Layoff Pies makes its public debut, he generously stepped away from the kitchen to explain.

As I understand it, you are starting a pie business.
I mean, we’re starting this initial pop-up, which will be giving away — in what I hope is an annual tradition — pies to any journalist who got laid off this year. And then from there, we’re going to see what we can roll out, and hopefully we’ll expand — provide pies for events, do pop-ups at specific times, maybe over the holidays. And then, in the unfortunate-but-expected event there’s another round of layoffs somewhere, we’ll hopefully be available to provide the smallest silver lining. But I’m still in journalism. Certainly, that’s the main job. This is essentially a side business, and hopefully, it’ll be able to sustain itself and just be a nice thing for a community of journalists, and whoever else in New York wants pie. That’s the goal. I don’t really have ambitions to grow a pie empire. As fun as that would be.

Is it fair to say it’s a pie
 hustle? A pie project?
Yeah, it’s a pie project. It’s an experiment, and we’ll see if it works. We’ll see where it goes. But it’s definitely more of a project than a viable business. If I can do this, and it doesn’t make me lose my hat, that’s good by me. Like, this is fun. Breaking even is a fine result, if that’s what ends up happening.

Where did Layoff Pies come from? It’s a good name.
So in March 2021, I got laid off, along with a lot of other people, and it put me in a precarious situation. And at the time, a lot of friends and co-workers and union people rallied to help me, and were super-supportive, and not really knowing what else to do, I baked them pies. And so then I started going around town and delivering what I called “layoff pies.” But I didn’t really have any intentions to do anything more than that at first.

Tell me about your previous pie experience. Like, theoretically, I could make pies for people, but I’m fairly confident they wouldn’t want them.
I’d baked for a while. It’s nice, when you’re looking at a screen all day, you’re on the phone, you’re doing a lot of things that are less tactile, or less tangible, to have something else. So I bake, I do some woodworking
And then when lockdown hit, I had a lot of time, so I went hard on pies. I never got into the bread aspect — I don’t know if I have the patience for it. Also, the place across from me still had bread, so I didn’t feel the need to make it myself. But I couldn’t find anywhere that made pie.

I worked on it, and then also started getting help from another journalist who’d previously worked as a baker. I’ve gotten better. There was a blackberry-apple pie I made — maybe in September 2020? — that was a turning point. It just looked great. It had that bright-purple filling bubbling up, it tasted like a perfect blend of apples and blackberries.

What is it about pie?
There’s a lot you can do with pies, and they make people happy in a way that’s fun. There’s something nice about it being seasonal, checking in with what produce happens to be around. Making something that changes with time — that’s an alluring part of it. And it has this nice contrast: You can get really precise and great at making the dough, but then you go out and have fun with the fillings. So this year, we have two pies. We have a malted-chocolate chess pie, which is a good one — if you’ve ever had a Malteser, those British chocolates, it tastes a little bit reminiscent of that, or a chocolate milkshake. The other pie is a blackberry-apple pie. It’s a more traditional fruit pie with a lot of Thanksgiving-y cinnamon, cardamom-type spices — a lot of classic pie tastes in there.

How many free pies can you reasonably do, just financially?
We’re gonna find out! I’ve had to revise my initial estimates, because a lot of people have been extremely generous and donated money as a kind of pass-it-on. More than a dozen people so far have sponsored somebody for a layoff pie. And that’s just yesterday. It means that I can hopefully ramp up the number of pies I’m able to give people.

I’m a little bit worried you’re underestimating the number of laid-off journalists who like pie.
A lot of people got laid off this year. I can’t actually get them all. That was something I definitely felt I had to couch in the announcement. It’s going to be as many as I can do. I wish that I could give everybody who got laid off this year a pie, but just looking at the numbers, I think I would need an industrial facility to make that happen.

And you also have all the regular paid preorders, too. How many pies can you physically make in a day?
Depending on the hours I do it, as many as 30 or 40, I think? That’s my estimate, but we’re going to find out. I managed to meet all the writing deadlines I had before this kicked off, so I cleared some space for pie. This is a pie week.

Cuba Gooding Jr. Headed To Trial In February, New York City Groping Case | News

0

Cuba Gooding Jr‘s trial is scheduled to start in Feb. 2022 for his New York City groping case.

According to ABC News, Judge Curtis Farber set the trial date for Feb. 1, which involves the allegations that the 53-year-old violated three different women at three various Manhattan nightclubs in 2018 and 019.

“This case has been on my calendar for two years, going on three years,” Farber said at a hearing in state court in Manhattan.

The Oscar-winning actor is accused of allegedly pinching one woman’s buttocks, squeezing the breast of another, and forcibly touching a woman inappropriately. He was arrested in June 2019 after a 29-year-old woman told police officers that Gooding groped her without her consent at Magic Hour Rooftop Bar & Lounge near Times Square. He was charged with the other incidents soon after.

Gooding’s trial was originally scheduled for April 2020 but was postponed after cases of the coronavirus surged in New York, eventually shutting the state down.

He has pleaded not guilty and denies all allegations

EMPIRE OF DESIRE (Empire Series #1) by RINA KENT

0

‘I don’t know what exactly she is to me or where we’ll go from here. But I know one thing for sure. Gwyneth is now mine.’

It started with a kiss and exploded from there. We do love a good age gap, forbidden romance, and Empire of Desire was certainly that. An age gap of 18 years to be exact between thirty-eight-year-old Nate Weaver, and his best friend’s daughter, twenty-year-old Gwen Shaw. Talk about passion
. these two ignited once their attraction took hold.

‘That’s what Nate does – he steals attention. He’s a thief. Because every time he’s in sight, I’m robbed of breath and other things I don’t want to put a name to
’

Years of crushing on her dad’s best friend lead Gwen Shaw to take control and plant a kiss on Nathaniel Weaver on her eighteenth birthday. It throws a curveball at Nate, knowing Gwen is off limits and her dad, Nate’s best friend Kingsley Shaw would kill him, so he does his best to avoid her at all costs.

That is until, a terrifying and tragic event throws them together, forcing them into a fake marriage, and yeah, we all know how they turn out right? These two can’t keep their hands off one another! Gwen now has the power to stand up to him, much to the dismay and amusement of Nate as his feelings for Gwen go way beyond platonic! They may have married out of necessity but those feelings, especially for Nate, soon became something else – something possessive, raw, and all consuming.

“It’s a fake marriage.”
“Fake is an illusion, but this is real, tangible, touchable.”

Rina Kent delivered an overbearing, cynical, sexy hero with Nate, and of course, we fell for him. But, as domineering as he was, this man was very much in tune with Gwen’s feelings, her emotions, and her vulnerabilities. We knew he’d do anything in his power to protect her, he was crazy for this girl!

‘The best way to become a king is to slaughter one.’

There was angst from all angles, a bit of mystery as we slowly uncover the mysterious woman who abandoned Gwen when she was a baby, leaving her to be raised by her loving and overprotective Dad Kingsley. What a credit he was – bringing up a baby singlehandedly whilst going to college and building his hugely successful string of law firms Weaver & Shaw with Nate.

The repetitiveness of some things grated on us – the vanilla theme for instance– we were overloaded with it in this book, and it did become tedious towards the end. We got it, she loved vanilla milkshakes, vanilla ice cream
we just didn’t to be constantly reminded. A couple of things didn’t add up or seemed ‘convenient‘ for want of a better word, which had us scratching our heads.

Told mostly in dual POV from Gwen and Nate, we also loved the sporadic POV’s from Kingsley. This book certainly delivered what it said on the tin – Empire of Desire is a sexy, passionate, crazy forbidden age-gap romance.

I’ve Done Something Wrong If I’m 30 & Still Spider-Man

Tom Holland has become one of the biggest stars of this generation thanks to his starring role in the Spider-Man franchise. However, it seems like Holland knows exactly when he’d like to step away from the iconic character.

In a recent interview with GQ, Holland spoke about his history with the character, and while he loves the character of Peter Parker, it could be time to move on soon.

“Maybe it is time for me to move on,” Holland said. “Maybe what’s best for Spider-Man is that they do a Miles Morales film. I have to take Peter Parker into account as well, because he is an important part of my life,” Holland says. “If I’m playing Spider-Man after I’m 30, I’ve done something wrong.”

The article goes on to mention Holland’s other ambitions, including a small quote from his Spider-Man co-star Jacob Batalon that says Holland mentions portraying James Bond “a lot.” While it’s unknown if Holland is serious about giving up the mantle of Spider-Man, he still has some time to go before making it to the age of 30 as the actor is 25.

“I might start shooting The Crowded Room and go, ‘You know what, this is what I’m going to do for the rest of my life.’ Or I might do Spider-Man 4, 5, and 6, finish when I’m 32, and never make another,” Parker says later in the interview. “I’m not sure what I want to do.”

Spider-Man: No Way Home sees the return of Tom Holland as the beloved titular wall-crawler, who will now be joined by Benedict Cumberbatch’s Doctor Strange. They’re expected to team up against Jamie Foxx’s Electro and Alfred Molina’s Doctor Octopus, who are currently the only ones that had seemingly confirmed their return. Like WandaVision, it has been confirmed that No Way Home will tie into the events of Sam Raimi’s Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness.

The third installment to the MCU’s Spider-Man films will also feature the return of most of the first two films’ cast including Emmy winner Zendaya (Euphoria, Dune) as MJ, Jacob Batalon (50 States of Fright) as Ned, Marisa Tomei (The King of Staten Island) as Aunt May, Tony Revolori (The French Dispatch) as Flash, and Hannibal Buress (Tag) as Coach Wilson.

Spider-Man: No Way Home is scheduled to hit theaters on December 17, 2021.

Pusha T has released a new song called “Misfit Toys.” It’s a collaboration with the Los Angeles–based musician Mako as part of the soundtrack for Arcane, Netflix’s new series based on the League of Legends video game. The Arcane soundtrack also features Curtis Harding and Jazmine Sullivan’s “Our Love.” Listen to Pusha T and Mako’s new song “Misfit Toys” below.

“I remember the moment we connected and heard Pusha T’s first pass, everything felt like lift off,” said Mako in a statement. “He came at it with such authenticity and passion and energy. After that first clip, I caught him using this word, ‘misfits,’ and it immediately clicked for us to lean into that type of ‘misfit toy’ energy that [Arcane characters] Ekko and the Firelights represent.”

“Misfit Toys” is Pusha T’s first track as a lead artist since 2019 when he shared “Sociopath,” “Coming Home,” and “Puppets (Succession Remix).” Earlier this year, the rapper was featured on Divine’s “Jungle Mantra” as well as “Tell the Vision” and “Top Shotta,” two songs from the posthumous Pop Smoke album Faith.

Pusha T’s latest album, Daytona, arrived in May 2018. Revisit “Pusha T Breaks Down Every Song on His New Album, Daytona.”
