Café Allegro Reopens at MIM on November 1

Today, April Salomon, executive director of the Musical Instrument Museum (MIM), announced the November 1 reopening of award-winning Café Allegro in partnership with hospitality management company Guest Services, Inc. (GSI). Executive Chef James Moran will introduce an inspired new menu of seasonal dishes and drinks to mark the reopening. The reimagined menu will offer guests a range of rotating selections that celebrate culinary influences from around the globe, many prepared with local flavors and ingredients. The inaugural menu from GSI will include a variety of original sandwiches, salads, hearty soups, and fresh grilled entrees.

Chef Moran reopens Café Allegro with a menu that will change weekly and seasonally. Selections include a wild mushroom bisque with truffle oil and chives and an autumn chopped salad with apple, bacon, and pepitas tossed in an apple cider vinaigrette. Grill items such as a gochujang burger with pickled onions on a brioche bun reflect the museum’s global nature. A classic grilled chicken sandwich and a tepary bean veggie burger come with a choice of house-prepared sides. Plated entrees take full advantage of local ingredients and flavors, like a smothered beef burrito with salsa verde and a southwest turkey meatloaf with salsa norteña. Specials will run weekly, including Moran’s crab corn fritters with Old Bay and a vegetarian panko-crusted cauliflower parmesan. Guests can peruse the day’s full menu before their visit at MIMdining.org.

In October, MIM also began service at the adjacent Beats Coffee Bar offering specialty roasted coffee, espresso, and tea drinks, along with house-made pastries and other breakfast offerings, grab-and-go lunch options, wine, beer, and other seasonal treats.

“We are absolutely thrilled to welcome museum guests and the Phoenix community back to Café Allegro for a memorable in-person dining experience. Our refreshed culinary offerings are reason enough to visit MIM and will further enhance the MIM experience during our innovative exhibitions and programs,” Salomon says. “It has been a pleasure to see and taste all-new dishes as the menu has come together, and I hope our guests enjoy GSI’s creations as much as we do. The food is a delicious complement to the global collections and perspectives presented throughout our galleries.”

GSI has over 100 years of experience in the hospitality industry, managing the culinary services at a range of cultural and civic institutions and special events. MIM joins an impressive portfolio of celebrated institutions including the National Park Service, Smithsonian museums, and presidential inaugural balls.

The new partnership with GSI also expands MIM’s catering and event services. The exciting new culinary program will bring opportunities to host conferences and corporate celebrations, social gatherings, and weddings for groups of 10 to 1,000 plus. The Fastest Way to Fall was our first book by Denise Williams and we loved it! A great mix of humour, sweetness, swoon, with a poignant storyline and wonderfully relatable characters. A slow-burn romance with a wonderful message about body positivity, for anyone who’s struggled to find their place, for those of us who have struggled with their weight, or for those who have not yet learned to love themselves, this is a story for you.

Despite its light-heartedness and cartoon cover, this book touches on some important issues. Though not at all a dark read, the story does deal with self-love, trial by social media, drug addiction, and eating disorders, but as we said, the author deals with these in a light, but no less important way.

‘I never wanted someone to have the ammunition to make me feel like that again.’

Parts of this story really struck a chord with us, and we related to it in so many ways, as will a lot of our fellow readers. So relatable was it, that by the end, we were not only cheering on Britta, but we were also cheering on ourselves, such was the way the author beautifully told Britta’s story.

Editorial assistant Britta Colby dreams of being a journalist, to share her thoughts and refreshing take on her battles with the world. Britta is a natural, she’s honest, open, and had a wonderfully funny self-deprecating humour. Although Britta is basically happy with who she is, she endures the judgment of others because of her weight.

‘She said she was embarrassed to go to the gym like thin people would judge her and fat people would think she didn’t like herself?’

Pitted against her colleague Claire, to document her journey with a fitness and wellness app, Britta discovers, not only the power she wields within, but she meets the gorgeous, sweet Wes Lawson. Now, every girl needs a Wes to spur her on! If he was our trainer, we couldn’t help but succeed with his encouragement and positivity. The sky would be the limit on what could be achieved if you had a Wes in your corner.

Britta and her refreshing honesty soon struck a chord with many online followers, who take the chirpy Britta to heart. Her talent for writing what’s in her heart is a runaway success, but the stakes are high between Britta and Claire.

Wes Lawson is a man battling his own demons. There is so much vulnerability beneath his sunny veneer, and we couldn’t love him more! So much lies beneath the CEO of the hugely popular FitME App.

Universal Studios Japan Getting Demon Slayer Food Collaboration

Universal Studios Japan is officially getting Demon Slayer food, continuing the collaboration that started in September.

A pop-up restaurant called the Wisteria Restaurant will serve a variety of dishes inspired by the various characters of the anime, including a hamburger dish from Flame Hashira Rengoku, a beef katsu dish from Insect Hashira Shinobu, and a strawberry parfait from the Love Hashira Kanroji.

This is the second step in USJ’s Demon Slayer collaboration, with the first being the Demon Slayer XR Ride, a 360 degree VR experience that took riders aboard the Mugen Train, as they watch the dramatic battles between the slayer and the demons. The Hollywood Dream the Ride attraction also had two unique audio stories that riders could listen to, and another exclusive story will arrive on November 8, featuring Tanjiro, Nezuko, Zenitsu, and Inosuke. The collaboration, in general, is scheduled to go until February 13, 2022. It’s a testament to the overwhelming popularity of Demon Slayer in Japan.

The Demon Slayer anime recently returned with a retelling of the Mugen Train film, but the second season proper is set to debut on December 5, 2021, with the “Entertainment District” arc.

New Artist Spotlight: Marc-E Delivers a True Psychedelic ‘Catharsis’ on His Third LP

Marc-E’s style has certainly changed since his first drop in 2015, a track he created with hip hop group The X Presidents called “One Soul.” After that largely acoustic track, Marc-E started adding production and sound design into his early work, and six years later he’s released his third full-length and fully psybient album, titled “Catharsis.” From his discography, it seems to have been quite a journey.

As soon as his first album Here Again released on Bandcamp, Marc-E started injecting ambient electronic elements into his work. His epic, 17-minute “Freedom Forest,” which is so ambient and natural it could easily have been on a spa or massage playlist. The very next track, “Wo! 6EQUJ5,” however, shows that Marc-E was still experimenting as it’s more techno-forward. Clearly a nod to Kraftwerk and other techno pioneers, by this time it’s also clear from this track that a move to EDM was starting to happen.

Marc-E’s second album, Sub Ek, is back to being very ambient and here we also see his spiritual side coming through on tracks like “Totem,” “Rite of Passage”…the whole album really. This is where Marc-E really goes psybient: all the elements of psytrance but instead of trance, there’s lots of ambient sounds and varied beat structures. Lots of organic and acoustic instrumentation is used here as well: Indian tabla drums, echoey, Chant-style vocals, et al. Done as one continuous piece of music that extends through all the tracks, Sub Ek seems to have defined Marc-E’s style, at least for the forseeable future.

After releasing a cheeky and more dancey mix of “Nataraja” off of Sub Ek and a tease release of “Brahman” in 2019, Catharsis released last month. It’s a culmination of all Marc-E’s style over the years, blending acoustic instrumentation and drums, ambient production, EDM sensibility and even a little jazz to make a style all his own. Also done as sort of one continuous or contiguous work, Catharsis was just that for Marc-E. A contemplation of the times from the deepest possible perspective, track names like “Acceptance,” “Virtues of Isolation” and “Shadow Work” tap into the reality of what most of humankind was feeling between 2019 and now. Rather than getting angry or political, Catharsis advises that one take a journey behind one’s bellybutton and process those feelings. Whether by listening to trippy, psybient meditative music or by other means, this album reminds us that the inner work is often more important than whatever mess we’ve gotten ourselves into in the physical realm.

While it seems Marc-E has found his style with Catharsis, fans would be on warning to expect the unexpected with the Vancouver artist’s future offerings. This album is clearly an experimentation and, as stylized as it is, it’s still lose enough in said style to portend more experimentation and growth for Marc-E, both musically and personally. Here’s hoping all musicians do the same, after the pando and beyond.
