NEXT TOP FIVE MUSICAL DOCUMENTARIES

0

Here we are. Back again with the next top five of my favorite Musical Documentaries or like I say Rock Docs. These are five films I enjoyed about artists we hardly got to know, with the exception of the Talking Heads. From Marvin Gaye to Kurt Cobain and everyone in between. I love it when the camera goes backstage and goes into the lives of singers who left the Earth too early, but at least we have them on tape! Check out my top five musical documentaries.

AMY

Indie Wire says: “A powerful, moving documentary on the short but electrifying life of British singer-songwriter Amy Winehouse. “An extraordinary, powerful work” Asif Kapadia director of the doc features retro footage of the culturally influential singer Amy Winehouse. This particular piece of art includes interviews with Lauren Gilbert, Mitchell Winehouse, Janis Winehouse, Raye Cosbert, Tyler James, Pete Doherty, Tony Bennett, and many more. “Confessional with punchlines” – is how the singer described her songwriting abilities. Asif Kapadia’s melancholy film explores her short, explosive life. Winehouse’s own songs narrate the story, which is more like a diary than the average documentary. The beautifully sad life of a great artist who definitely died too young and will bring you into the micro existence of maybe one of the top female crooners of all time. Well, if you missed her life, you can catch her film – Amy.

KURT AND COURTNEY

After rocker Kurt Cobain’s death was ruled a suicide, a film crew landed in Seattle to shoot a documentary. Director Nick Broomfield engages the many people who existed in Kurt’s life. Cobain’s aunt gives her own home movies and recordings. The estranged father of Cobain’s widow Courtney Love, an L.A. private investigator who worked for Love, a nanny for Kurt and Courtney’s child, friends and lovers of both. Although Love won’t talk to the filmmaker or answer his inquiries – he comes to believe the coroner’s verdict. The documentary portrays the singer as a shy, slight, man tired of touring, hates fame, and loves heroin. It also shows an out-going Courtney who comes off as dramatic, controlling, elevating from groupie to star. The short life of Kurt Cobain is put front and center with this explosively, informative documentary, diving into the life and relationship of a legendary singer who brought a grudge to the masses. How did he really die? Only Courtney knows and that might be the problem.

STOP MAKING SENSE, THE TALKING HEADS CONCERT FILM

Jonathan Demme’s work of art is widely known as one of the best concert/music documentaries of all time, winning the National Society of Film Critics award for best non-fiction film in 1984. It was shot during four nights of concerts at Hollywood’s Pantages Theatre. Stop Making Sense includes performances of the first Talking Heads single, “Psycho Killer” (1977), through to their most recent hit at the time, “Burning Down the House” (1983). It also includes songs from the solo career of frontman David Byrne and  Tom Tom Club, the side project of the drummer and bassist, Chris Frantz and Tina Weymouth.

The band raised $1.2 million to make the movie themselves. The four main members of Talking Heads are joined by singers Lynn Mabry and Edna Holt, the guitarist Alex Weir, the keyboardist Bernie Worrell, and the percussionist Steve Scales.

Stop Making Sense is a cult classic. It used early digital audio techniques which were innovative for the time. In 2021, it was selected for preservation in the United States National Film Registry by the Library of Congress – David Ritz

WHAT’S GOING ON?

In 1984, Marvin Gaye left behind one of the great American, musical legacies. A superb vocalist and subtle composer, Gaye was a visionary who expressed the tenor of his times. He was both radical and romantic, a self-taught singer with a flair for saying what was authentically true, he thrived on confession and loved being true to himself. His unique talent of turning the listener into a secret friend, of making one absorbed in his immediate presence. Marvin’s aura combined with his spiritual and sensual essences made him one of the most memorable singers/writers of all time. His music worked wonders but in his personal life, they clashed. Marvin Gaye translated his complex life into beautiful music. This beautiful life is put on film for all to see.

SUPERSTAR

The producers of Jesus Christ Superstar, filmed “Superstars”, a feature-length documentary about the BTS of the original “Jesus Christ Superstar” theatrical movie. The 90-minute documentary features making of footage and interviews with cast members and Norman Jewison. In 1972, director Jewison took a group of young thespians, singers, and dancers to war-ravaged Israel to shoot the adaptation of the hit rock opera “Jesus Christ Superstar.” The production team put together a new expanded digital cut of the original documentary “Superstars.” The original 2015, 52 min feature is being expanded to 90 min with an additional chapter of the film cast reunion in New York City and unseen footage of one of the cast members, Barry Dennen, who played “Pontius Pilate” retelling his experiences before and after filming in Israel. One of my favorite Rock Operas and a must-see! If you liked the movie, you will love the doc!

Jim Carrey Kills The Grinch 2 Rumors

0

Following recent rumors about Jim Carrey reportedly reprising his iconic role as the Grinch in an upcoming movie, the Golden Globe winner immediately addressed The Grinch 2 casting rumor.

According to People, Carrey’s representative debunked the reports about the acclaimed actor’s return as the Grinch in a potential sequel to 2000’s classic Christmas movie How the Grinch Stole Christmas. “There is no truth to Jim reprising his role as the Grinch in a sequel to The Grinch,” said the rep.

This Grinch 2 rumor comes after Carrey previously announced his decision to retire from acting following his performance as Dr. Robotnik in 2022’s Sonic the Hedgehog 2. Now that he has decided to step away from acting, it’s currently unclear if he will be reprising his role as the villain in the upcoming Sonic the Hedgehog 3.

What is How the Grinch Stole Christmas about?

How the Grinch Stole Christmas movie was based on Dr. Seuss’ 1957 book of the same name. The film adaptation was directed by Ron Howard from a screenplay co-written by Jeffrey Price and Peter S. Seaman. Besides Carrey, the film starred Christine Baranski, Taylor Momsen, Jeffrey Tambor, Bill Irwin, and Molly Shannon.

During its theatrical run in November 2000, the film received a worldwide gross of over $345 million at the box office, making it one of the highest-grossing holiday movies of all time. The story was adapted into an animated film by Illumination, which featured the voice of Benedict Cumberbatch as the titular character.

Anti-Flag’s Justin Sane Sued for Raping Fan in 2010

0

At the motel, Sarhadi claims that Justin Sane screamed, “Football Tackle!” and tackled her onto the bed, then strangled her and forced her to perform oral sex. She says she was crying and repeatedly told him to stop, but he ignored her, penetrating her vagina with his penis and eventually passing out on top of her. She says she was able to escape his hotel room without waking him.

Sarhadi says the incident left her with a number of psychological injuries, and that she has had treatment for “C-PTSD, clinical depression, ADHD resulting from trauma, emotional hyperarousal, and rejection sensitivity dysphoria.” She is seeking damages for lost income and medical and mental health costs, accusing Justin Sane of assault, sexual battery, and intentional infliction of emotional distress. She also accuses Hardwork and Doe 1 of negligence and negligent infliction of emotional distress.

In her statement, Sarhadi says that, when she first shared her story, she did so for her “own personal healing” and “had no intention of naming Justin or pursuing a lawsuit.” But hearing from other alleged survivors of abuse at his hands encouraged her to take action. “In the last five months I have learned the levels of his depravity and witnessed the inaction of those around him who could have and should have intervened to protect us,” she says.

Dr. Ann Olivarius, an attorney for Sarhadi, said in her own statement, “I predict that in five years the music industry will be viewed the same way as the Catholic Church or the Boy Scouts—a powerful force that also enabled and shielded sexual predators for decades. ‘Drugs, sex & rock ‘n roll’ was a reality that meant a lot of young women got abused. The bands had handlers who made it all happen and executives who covered it all up because so much money depended on it.”

After the first allegation surfaced, several women came forward with similar accusations of predatory behavior and sexual abuse by Justin Sane, as the lawsuit notes. At the time, the other members of Anti-Flag released a statement condemning him and thanking the survivors for coming forward. Pitchfork has emailed Justin Sane for comment.

Terrorbytes Documentary Series Charts the History of Horror Games

0

The creators of the extensive horror movie documentary movies In Search of Darkness are turning their bloodshot eyes toward horror video games for In Search of Darkness Presents: Terrorbytes; a five-part documentary series on the history of horror gaming.

Horror Gaming History Uncovered

Horror has grown into one of the most popular genres of video games over the past few decades, from the survival horror of Alone in the Dark and Resident Evil to more commercial horror-flavored fare like CoD Zombies, and importantly the surge in indie horror games that have led the way for the industry over the last 10-15 years.

The documentary series promises to go in deep on a wide variety of horror game history stories, and include insight from those in the know behind the games and those who live for them (I’ll assume they’ve not got around to asking for me yet as they’re very busy).

CreatorVC, the makers of the documentary, are asking for fan feedback on the website, and detailing exactly what its plans are with the series.

The official synopsis is as follows.

”In Search of Darkness Presents: Terrorbytes – The Evolution of Video Game Horror is a deep dive, retrospective documentary series covering the rich history, evolution and emotional core of the horror gaming landscape. Through separate episodes that each put a specific horror gaming topic under the microscope, viewers will be taken on a journey from video game horror’s humble beginnings to its explosion of popularity today — exploring throughout the series such thematic ideas as why we love scary games, how the design sensibilities of horror gaming break away from and upend traditional video game power fantasies, how horror games both draw from and inspire other mediums, and more.

From the formative ideas of 3D Monster Maze (1981) and Haunted House (1982), to the smash hits of Resident Evil (1996) and Silent Hill (1999), to the now thriving indie scene and the off-the-beaten-path obscurities, no stone will be left unturned in chronicling, analyzing and understanding the vivid and varied world of horror gaming.

With a huge scope displaying over 50 years of horror gaming history, Terrorbytes will discuss the psychology, themes, narratives, mechanics, visuals and development of these games with some of the most prominent figures involved in their creation as well as accomplished writers, academics, and horror talent.”

The episode titles and details are as follows

Enter the Survival Horror

An examination of horror gaming’s most famous sub-genre. Survival Horror birthed classics such as Resident Evil, Alone in the Dark, and Dead Space. A solid place to start a series on horror gaming, that’s for sure.

Lethal Licences

A look at the use of licenses in horror games. As far back as the ’80s, horror movies were made into video games, and that’s not really stopped. These days, more horror movies and their characters appear in games than ever before, with the likes of Dead by Daylight collecting them in a single place and studios like Gun Media giving loving care to the likes of The Texas Chain Saw Massacre in game form.

Full Motion Frights

FMV horror is a curious thing. It was certainly unique back in the ’90s, but it had a poor hit rate. A resurgence in the format has given this strange sub-genre new life.

The Indie Revolution

Indie horror is the lifeblood of the horror gaming scene. It blew up with the emergence of YouTube Let’s Plays, and has taken horror to new heights with games such as Amnesia: The Dark Descent, FAITH, Murder House, and Five Nights at Freddy’s paving the way over the years.

Cursed and Controversial

Documents the history of horror gaming’s most cursed and controversial moments, including Rockstar’s Manhunt, and Capcom’s Rule of Rose.

Your EDM Premiere: Billain Offers a Different Perspective With ‘Different Eyes’ [Vision]

0

By now, everyone in both the D&B and bass worlds knows that when Billain is about to drop a new release, it’s going to be a game-changer. Now with his last releases being in February, the scene is more than ready for a new joint from the Bosnia-based mega-producer. Or so they think. Different Eyes, the upcoming EP due out this Friday, November 17 on Vision, is once again going to lock Billain into the pinnacle of creativity in bass music.

Having already teased the title track two weeks ago, fans might assume Different Eyes will be another atmospheric concept EP, similar to 2022’s Lands Unbreached or 2019’s Nomad’s Revenge. Being that Billain has been so focused on film production with his multi-award winning short Fugitive and scoring said film as well as new A/V projects, it wouldn’t be too farfetched of an assumption. It would, however, be wrong. The fast, aggressive, yet painfully emotive D&B styles that caused both industry and fans to become infatuated with the dizzying levels of production this artist can attain is on Different Eyes in full force.

While almost every track on this EP can easily unalive any dancefloor, it’s important to note that Different Eyes is still a concept album and a journey, and it should be listened to as such at least once. It starts with the atmospheric, largely beatless wonder of an intro track, “It’s First Dream.” This lullaby brings the listener back into a world that only Billain fully knows: one of heavy atmos, cyberpunk dreamscapes and endless lands made of sound and code. It’s actually kind of him to lull the listener into this state, because the next tracks hit so damned hard, we nee a buffer.

What follows in the next five tracks is a sequence of ever faster and crunchier bass hurricanes, reflecting chaos and anger and tightly-reigned skill all at once. Our YEDM premiere is the second track, “Baka,” which presumably taken from the anime slang for “crazy” or “foolish,” and it certainly has the wild chaos of an anime fight scene. Easily the heaviest and most chaotic track on the EP, “Baka” drops the listener into the narrative of Different Eyes like a 3-meter vert ramp and doesn’t let go until it’s damn well ready. As intense and chaotic as it sounds, “Baka” was likely the most tightly produced track on the album, simply by virtue of how chaotic it is. It’s always the maddest syncopation that takes the most programming, and it might also be a little nod to jazz fusion. Only the best DJs will be able to mix this track, and it’s likely that’s the way Billain wanted it.

Going through the journey of the rest of the EP with “Kinetic,” “Uncanny Valley,” “FUCK Y00” and “Void Me,” the intensity and speed of the work only increases, but unlike “Baka,” they all have a trackable drum & bass beat. The EP ends up feeling like exploring a wild new planet in some futuristic inner space hellscape, from the prep of “Different Eyes” to the bumpy, aggressive culture shock of “Baka” to finding one’s stride in the “Uncanny Valley” to being over it already with “FUCK Y00” to the last ride of the ego-destroying ride of “Void Me.” “Different Eyes” is the victory lap, a reward for beating the game and making it through this fever dream of an EP.

As a psycho-thriller in sonic form, Different Eyes is a reflection of doing hard inner work. It’s chaos and anger and confusion and a hurricane of emotions, but the title track is the goal: meant to be the new perspective once one has let all that beautiful pain go. Whether you are working on something personally or just unthinkingly follow the arc of this EP, you will come to the end of this masterpiece seeing the world with “Different Eyes.”

Different Eyes drops tomorrow, November 17 on Vision. Click here to pre-order or pre-save.
