FX Networks has dropped the official Welcome to Wrexham trailer, which continues the underdog journey of Welsh football team Wrexham AFC after the club was bought by actors Ryan Reynolds and Rob McElhenney in 2020. The series is scheduled to make its return on September 12 on FX and Hulu.

The video features Reynolds and McElhenney as they discuss the unprecedented attention and high expectations that Wrexham AFC has garnered. This comes after the club lost its bid for a promotion in the Premier League during the first season.

What is Welcome to Wrexham about?

“In 2020, Rob McElhenney and Ryan Reynolds teamed up to purchase the team in the hopes of turning the club into an underdog story the whole world could root for,” reads the synopsis. “The worry? Rob and Ryan have no experience in football or working with each other. That said, they are serious about their investment in Wrexham, improving the club, and doing right by the townspeople. From Hollywood to Wales, the pitch to the locker room, the front office to the pub, Welcome to Wrexham will track Rob and Ryan’s crash course in football club ownership and the inextricably connected fates of a team and a town counting on two actors to bring some serious hope and change to a community that could use it.”

Welcome to Wrexham chronicles McElhenney and Reynolds’ purchase and stewardship of the Welsh football team Wrexham AFC. The docuseries tracks the dreams and people of Wrexham, a working-class town in North Wales, U.K.

The docuseries is executive produced by McElhenney, Reynolds, Nick Frenkel, John Henion, and Boardwalk Pictures’ Andrew Fried, Dane Lillegard, Jordan Wynn, and Sarina Roma. It is produced by Boardwalk Pictures.

45 years ago today, the bloody creature feature Piranha by the great Joe Dante was unleashed upon moviegoing audiences. It was one of the more notable “killer fish” films in the wake of the monumental success of Steven Spielberg’s Jaws.

The movie stars Bradford Dillman (Escape From the Planet of the Apes), Dick Miller (Gremlins), Kevin McCarthy (Invasion of the Body Snatchers), and Heather Menzies-Urich (The Sound of Music). It sees a pack of flesh-eating piranha created by the government accidentally let loose on a summer resort. Bloody chaos naturally ensues.

While Piranha’s existence owes an awful lot to Steven Spielberg’s blockbuster shark movie (executive producer Roger Corman proudly called it his “homage to Jaws”), there was no ill will from Spielberg, who claimed it was the best of the Jaws rip-offs after getting an advance screening. The Jurassic Park director’s positive reaction to Dante’s film also helped Corman’s New World company avoid a potential lawsuit from Universal Studios.

Piranha’s Legacy

Piranha’s bite on horror culture didn’t end at that film. Its teeth got deep enough to have lasting impact on the industry in many ways.

It helped kick off Dante’s career, and he would then go on to direct plenty of hit movies such as The Howling, Gremlins, and The Burbs, not to mention his actual collaboration with Spielberg on The Twilight Zone: The Movie. The practical FX crew contained Phill Tippett, who would also go on to work with Spielberg for Jurassic Park. The reviled sequel Piranha II: The Spawning gave a directorial debut to James Cameron (in conjunction with the more seasoned Ovidio G. Assonitis).

A remake dubbed Piranha 3D starring Ving Rhames, Christopher Lloyd, and Elizabeth Shue was released in 2010. It was directed by Alexandre Aja (The Hills Have Eyes Remake, Crawl, Mirrors). A lesser sequel came not long after.

In the long history of animal attack movies, Piranha may not be as memorable as iconic as the greats, but it is an important one all the same.

Kevin Spacey recently appeared in the Gene Fallaize-directed film Control in a voice role. Spacey was preparing for his now-finished trial in the U.K. as he recorded. The casting choice is one Fallaize says he would do all over again.

Fallaize has no regrets picking Spacey for the role

Speaking to Variety, Fallaize was asked whether or not he received any backlash for the casting move. According to Fallaize, while the film received some initial backlash, responses have been mostly positive. The director says he would do it over again.

“When we first announced his casting, we got some of that,” said Fallaize. “But since yesterday I’ve received only positive so far. But for me, personally, what else can you go on? You know, the facts were laid out, simply as that. All of the facts were presented from both sides and the jury found him not guilty. [The jury] have all of the facts, facts that people on the Internet don’t have.

“The only people that know everything are the ones that were in that courtroom and they decided he was not guilty. These people that are saying – if they’re saying – that we’re whitewashing him or enabling him to come back, what facts have they got to contradict the jury? I don’t regret casting Kevin and I would do it all over again.”
