(Apple TV+)
Can Josh find new inspiration in the first season of the Mr. Corman TV series on Apple TV+? As we all know, the Nielsen ratings typically play a big role in determining whether a TV show like Mr. Corman is cancelled or renewed for season two. Apple TV+ and other streaming platforms, however, collect their own data. If you’ve been watching this TV series, we’d love to know how you feel about the first season episodes of Mr. Corman here.
An Apple TV+ comedy-drama series, the Mr. Corman TV show was created, written, and directed by its star, Joseph Gordon-Levitt. The rest of the cast includes Arturo Castro, Debra Winger, Bobby Hall a.k.a. Logic, Alexander Jo, Juno Temple, Jamie Chung, Shannon Woodward, and Hector Hernandez. The story follows the days and nights of Josh Corman (Gordon-Levitt), an artist at heart but not by trade. A career in music hasn’t panned out for him so, he teaches fifth grade at a public school in the San Fernando Valley. Josh’s ex-fiancé, Megan (Temple), has moved out and his high school buddy, Victor (Castro), has moved in. Josh knows he has a lot to be thankful for but he finds himself struggling nevertheless through anxiety, loneliness, and a sinking suspicion that he sucks as a person.
What do you think? Which season one episodes of the Mr. Corman TV series do you rate as wonderful, terrible, or somewhere between? Do you think that Mr. Corman on Apple TV+ should be cancelled or renewed for a second season? Don’t forget to vote, and share your thoughts, below.
Live Nation, the world’s largest entertainment company, announced in a new “best practices” document that artist teams will be allowed to require concert attendees to provide proof of vaccination or negative Covid-19 test results for entry into its venues. The new rule goes into effect on October 4, and it was already implemented at Lollapalooza earlier this month.
“We are working to ensure we are reopening in the best way possible for staff, artists, crew, fans, and communities at large,” said Michae Rapino, Live Nation’s chief executive, in the document. “Our teams have worked together to put new processes in place so that artists doing shows with Live Nation in the U.S. can require all attendees and staff to be fully vaccinated or show a negative test result for entry, where permitted by law.”
Live Nation’s decree arrives as the touring industry navigates a rocky return to full-capacity events as Covid-19 protocols vary state by state. Some states, like Florida and Texas, are experiencing spikes in new coronavirus infections due to the contagiousness of newer disease variants.
Rapino’s note appears in full, per Variety, below:
All –It has been great to see events make such a strong return across the U.S., with demand for concerts and festivals continuing to outpace our expectations.
LIVE NATION SHOWS
We are working to ensure we are reopening in the best way possible for staff, artists, crew, fans, and communities at large. Our teams have worked together to put new processes in place so that artists doing shows with Live Nation in the U.S. can require all attendees and staff to be fully vaccinated or show a negative test result for entry, where permitted by law. We believe this is a great model, and we have already implemented this successfully at many major shows including Lollapalooza. We know people are eager to return to live events and we hope these measures encourage even more people to get vaccinated. That is the number one thing anyone can do to take care of those around them and we are encouraging as many shows as possible to adopt this model.
EMPLOYEE VAX REQUIREMENT
In support of this model and to continue leading by example, we will be requiring that all employees in the U.S. be vaccinated to enter one of our events, venues, or offices – with limited exceptions as may be required by law. This requirement will go into effect on October 4, when our offices are set to reopen their doors for flex work and to allow on-site staff a few weeks to get vaccinated if they haven’t already. HR will share more details on this soon. As a reminder, we are providing an extra paid day off for every dose so you can schedule appointments easily. We’ve seen great vaccination enthusiasm among our staff so far, and we want to ensure we’re taking every step possible to keep you all safe. Our business and our industry are about uniting people and vaccines are one of the greatest tools for making sure that everyone can continue to enjoy live music together. We’ve gone through a lot this past year and it’s remarkable to see how far we’ve come. If you have any questions please don’t hesitate to reach out to your HR partner. And thank you for continuing to play a role in our continued success. – Michael
Song: Delayed Devotion
Singer: Duffy
Album: Rockferry
LYRICS:
It seems you wanna give me
A lifetime of security
Down on your dying knees
I watch you beg I watch you plead
But your words come much too late
My love for you has turned to hate
Cos you’ve taken too much time
To show me that you’re mine
When I drop you boy
You’ll need another toy
One that won’t stand up for herself
When I knock you down
You’ll need another town
Where somebody’s gonna talk to you
You just let me wait now it’s too late
For your delayed, delayed devotion
You try to convince me
About the possibilities
But I know that all your poetry
Just comes from insecurity
Cos your actions mean nothing no more
When it’s what I’ve been waiting for
Cos you’ve taken too much time
To show me that you’re mine
When I drop you boy
You’ll need another toy
One that won’t stand up for herself
When I knock you down
You’ll need another town
Where somebody’s gonna talk to you
Cos you just let me wait now it’s too late
For your delayed devotion
You played me for a fool for too long
Blinded by your lies I never saw you’re wrong
I’m no longer under your spell
Hear it in this song, you can go to hell
When I drop you boy
You’ll need another toy
One that won’t stand up for herself
When I knock you down
You’ll need another town
Where somebody’s gonna talk to you
You just let me wait and now it’s too late
For your delayed, delayed devotion

Nach Waxman at Kitchen Arts & Letters in 2018.

Nach Waxman, founder and longtime proprietor of the Upper East Side’s legendary Kitchen Arts & Letters, died suddenly yesterday, according to a note from the bookstore, which announced the news.
Before he became the “patron saint of food writers,” Waxman had been a Ph.D student in anthropology at Harvard, ultimately abandoning academia for a career in publishing, working as an editor at Macmillan, Harper & Row, and Crown. But eventually, the New York Times recalls, he grew “dispirited by the overtly commercial direction” of the industry, and in 1983, the New Jersey native opened Kitchen Arts & Letters. The store, as frequent Grub Street contributor Hugh Merwin noted years ago in Gothamist, may have bounced between a few different spaces on Lexington Avenue, but spiritually, for the last 38 years (and still counting), it has remained the same.
Waxman was always very clear on what the store was not. “If there’s one thing,” he told Merwin, “it’s that we hate to be regarded as a cookbook store.” Kitchen Arts & Letters was instead devoted to examining food, and our relationship to it, with what he called “full frontal thoroughness, depth, and breadth.” That meant cookbooks — rare cookbooks, global cookbooks, cookbooks in all different languages (the store also sold food-focused foreign language dictionaries for translation) — but also books about sustainability, history, biotechnology, restaurant economics, the meaning of gastronomy in the plays of Molière. You could get Marcella Hazan, but you could also get Secrets of Jesuit Soupmaking, Amy Sedaris but also Hydrocolloids, a food-chemistry textbook that had a moment with molecular gastronomists. In the basement, he established a kind of reference library, allowing chefs, researchers, and curious home cooks to copy down recipes from a collection of books too rare for him to sell.
But the books were only half the draw. The other half was Waxman (and, later, his business partner and co-owner Matt Sartwell, who will carry on the torch). He could point you in the direction of a book you didn’t know you wanted or help you track down an obscure title that you did. His reach extended beyond the army of chefs, restaurateurs, and food writers who were his regulars. Once, he advised Citibank on a banquet menu for the Venezuelan minister of finance, recounts the Times; when the American Museum of Natural History wanted food to go alongside a rainforest exhibit, they turned to him for guidance. And if you were just a regular sometimes-home cook looking for advice? He was a resource for you, too.
When, last September, Waxman and Sartwell launched a GoFundMe to keep the store afloat through the pandemic, testimonials poured in. “In the 1980s, Mr. Waxman sold me one of my first and favorite cookbooks: the original Classic Italian Cookbook by Marcella Hazan,” wrote one. Moosewood Cookbook author Mollie Katzen chimed in to say the store had been “the heart and soul of the American cookbook world for decades.” (The fundraiser was a success.)
For those of us who never had the pleasure of a Waxman recommendation, there is at least this old Times “Diner’s Journal” column, in which he dispenses cookbook wisdom — a pleasure and a window into what we’ll all be missing.

This month marks 20 years since Aaliyah Dana Haughton died in a plane crash. The singer never stopped being a force in pop culture and the details of her life and untimely death have been discussed and examined by the media many times over. As another unauthorized book about her gets ready for release, Aaliyah’s estate has issued a sternly worded statement cautioning anyone who writes about her without authorization.
“Protecting Aaliyah’s legacy is, and will always be, our focus. For 20 years we have battled behind the scenes, enduring shadowy tactics of deception with unauthorized projects targeted to tarnish,” the estate wrote. “We have always been confused as to why there is such a tenacity in causing more pain alongside what we already have to cope with for the rest of our lives.”
The statement continued, “Although we will continue to defend ourselves and her legacy lawfully and justly, we want to preempt the inevitable attacks on our character by all the individuals who have emerged from the shadows to leech off of Aaliyah’s life’s work. Ultimately, we desire closure and a modicum of peace so we can facilitate the growth of the Aaliyah Memorial Fund and other creative projects that embody Aaliyah’s true essence, which is to inspire strength and positivity for people of all creeds, races and cultures around the world.”

See the full statement below:
The statement comes just ahead of the August 17th release of Kathy Iandoli’s book Baby Girl: Better Known as Aaliyah. In the book, the music journalist, who has written for several outlets including VIBE, The Source, BET.com and others, claims the singer took sleeping pills before getting on the plane that ultimately crashed and ended her life. Some outlets, while reporting on the passage from the book, described the late singer as being “drugged.” Iandoli says the “drugged” angle is misreported.
According to Simon and Schuster, the “book was written without the participation of Aaliyah’s family/estate.” Aaliyah’s estate didn’t directly mention Iandoli in its statement.
The statement also called out an unnamed “unscrupulous endeavor to release Aaliyah’s music without any transparency or full accounting to the estate.”
On And On And On
According to Billboard back in January, only her debut album Age Ain’t Nothing But A Number, is available on streaming services. Fans of the late singer have continued to push for the release of her additional music, including her album, One in a Million, and her 2001 self-titled album, Aaliyah — and now it may finally be happening.
Her music catalog has been under the purview of her uncle and founder of Blackground Records, Barry Hankerson, who told Billboard in an August 5 interview that One in a Million will be released on streaming services August 25. ΛΛLIYΛH and I Care 4 U will follow on Sept. 10 and Oct. 8, respectively.
Hankerson maintains the music was not released earlier because of objections from Aaliyah’s mother Diane Haughton, who is his sister. Hankerson also revealed he has not spoken to his sister regularly since Aaliyah’s death.
Diane Haughton or Aaliyah’s estate have never publicly said they did not want to release her music.
According to USA Today, Aaliyah’s estate said in a statement through an attorney they were “not made aware” of the future streaming releases.
The five-time Grammy nominee died at age 22, along with eight others, in a plane crash on the Abaco Islands of the Bahamas on August 25, 2001.
