The Godfather of Harlem TV show on Epix: canceled or renewed for season 3?

(Epix)

Who will survive the second season of the Godfather of Harlem TV show on EPIX? As we all know, the Nielsen ratings typically play a big role in determining whether a TV show like Godfather of Harlem is cancelled or renewed for season three. EPIX and other streaming platforms, however, collect their own data. If you’ve been watching this TV series, we’d love to know how you feel about the second season episodes of Godfather of Harlem here.

An EPIX crime drama, the Godfather of Harlem TV show stars Forest Whitaker, Vincent D’Onofrio, Ilfenesh Hadera, Nigél Thatch, Giancarlo Esposito, Lucy Fry, Rafi Gavron, Antoinette Crowe-Legacy, Erik LaRay Harvey, and Demi Singleton. The series is inspired by the story of infamous crime boss Bumpy Johnson (Whitaker) who returned from 10 years in prison to find the neighborhood he once ruled in shambles. With the streets controlled by the Italian mob, Johnson must take on the Genovese crime family to regain control. Season two finds Johnson battling the New York Crime Families for control of the lucrative and murderous “French Connection” heroin pipeline in an ambitious plan. This pits him against not only the Italians and the law but also friends and family.

NYC Restaurant Workers Say Vaccine Mandate Is a Relief

0

Sam, who works as a bartender in the East Village, says that as New York’s bars and restaurants have reopened with safety regulations that he is expected to enforce, he has “uncomfortable experiences with people” weekly. In one instance shortly after indoor dining reopened, he asked a customer who had gotten up from his table to comply with the rule that people wear masks when not seated. “He just leans over the bar,” Sam recalls, “looks me dead in the eye, and says, ‘I don’t do that shit.’”

Things escalated from there, and the customer refused to leave. Sam, who asked not to use his last name for this story, says he didn’t know what to do. “All I could do was yell at these guys to fuck off and find something to possibly defend myself with.”

It’s the usual entitlement from customers with an added dose of a contentious issue, like dumping water into oil. The situation won’t be surprising to the countless hospitality workers who, in addition to their usual responsibilities, have been tasked with asking customers to do things they don’t always want to do. Even interactions that might have once been commonplace can be met with hostility, a reality that is worse for POC staffers, who often face more harassment in the workplace. One Black employee at Pinch Chinese, who asked not to be named, remembers a customer interaction she had this past weekend: “They requested to be seated; I told them we were fully committed and that it would be a 30-minute wait. He immediately said, ‘That’s such a nasty attitude,’” she says. “The truth is no one wants to hear ‘no’ — much less ‘please put on a mask’ — from a Black woman. You don’t. They don’t want to hear it from the president, and they definitely don’t want to hear it from someone in a restaurant.”

Given this tension, workers say they didn’t look forward to enforcing vaccine requirements set by their workplaces and the conflicts that would inevitably erupt when they told unvaccinated guests that they weren’t welcome to dine inside their restaurants. “If there’s a door guy, it’s not an issue — but we can’t afford to have a door guy every night,” says Evan, a Bushwick bartender. “Every other night of the week it’s on the bartenders and, if they have one, a barback. It’s just going to be a lot.”

Then at least some help arrived on Monday, when Mayor Bill de Blasio announced that New York City will require proof of vaccination from anyone going into restaurants, gyms, or theaters. It’s the first mandate of its kind in the United States, meant to push people to get vaccinated and, at least in part, to ease the burden on workers by making it standard. “It’s a relief,” says Sam, the East Village bartender. “This is something that’s caused a lot of problems.”

Though the rule takes effect on August 16, with enforcement set to begin September 13, many restaurants have already instituted vaccine mandates for indoor — and in at least one case, outdoor — customers. But even now, the shifting of responsibility from workers to the city agencies is a welcome change. “The fact that it’s not just me saying that, it’s a whole body of government, gives me some support,” says Sam. “I hope people will be less mad at me, and it will not be taken out on me in a really negative, shitty way.”

Anything that can be done to ease friction with customers is a positive step, says the Pinch employee: “Obviously now there’s the mandate being put down by the mayor, so it’s not necessarily a conversation that needs to be had — and I’m very grateful for that.”

Others, however, are less optimistic, given the government’s past bungling and the lack of specifics that have been offered regarding enforcement of the mandate. “With COVID rules, they were just like, ‘Yeah, do whatever you want — you guys figure it out,’” says Evan. “It just seemed like they didn’t learn anything from a year ago; they’ve learned almost nothing.”

And Sam, the East Village bartender, knows that some customers will continue to act out, no matter what the government says. “I definitely still expect some blowback from it,” he admits, although he’s clear that he is nevertheless happy to have the new rule in place. “I think I just feel a little safer, I guess, in that every single person will expect it everywhere now.”

Justin Timberlake’s longtime background vocalist Nicole Hurst has reportedly passed away. She was 39.

The pop musician took to his Instagram account on Friday and posted several photos and videos of Hurst, who he frequently referred to as his “sister.”

Featured in the slides were videos of Timberlake and Hurst touring together with the Tennessee Kids. Also in the memories was a selfie of the two as well as clips capturing moments when the two called each other “bro” and “sister.”

“My heart is so heavy. We lost a beautiful soul this week,” Timberlake wrote in the heartfelt tribute. “Nicole lit up every room she walked into. On and off the stage she was a constant source of joy and positivity.”

He continued: “Some things feel so unfair and we will never understand why they happen. What I do know is that we were blessed to laugh with her, to travel with her, and to experience her infectious smile and love for a life filled with music. Nicole, it’s not enough to say that I am going to miss you dearly. Thank you for your light. I will do my best to carry that with me. I love you, my sister. Forever family and forever a TN Kid. 💔.”

Hurst’s official cause of death has not been confirmed, though in 2015, she revealed to ABC 13 she was diagnosed with “Stage 2 triple-positive breast cancer.”

Evolution Showed Why David Duchovny Deserved More Comedy Roles

0

Way back in 2001, I got to see a sneak peek of a little film called Evolution. I knew next to nothing about the flick other than it was directed by Ivan Reitman and starred David Duchovny, Orlando Jones, and Julianne Moore, which meant I found myself in the rare position of going into a film completely blind. While my expectations weren’t very high, I enjoyed the clever little comedy for its broad humor and goofy tone. Sure, a lot of the big moments fall flat, but there’s still enough good material in Reitman’s sci-fi comedy to make it watchable.

Of course, what makes Evolution such a joy is seeing Duchovny in a rare comedic performance far removed from his cooler Agent Mulder, Hank Moody, and Jake Winters characters from The X-Files, Californication, and The Red Shoe Diaries. The actor plays the straight man to Jones’ manic science professor, but still gets plenty of deadpan quips to keep his performance from getting lost amidst the rather large production.

Check out some funny bits from Evolution for a few examples of Duchovny’s comic timing:

Unfortunately, Evolution barely recouped its costly $80 million price tag and was largely (and unfairly) discarded as a Ghostbusters knockoff. Such criticisms are more than valid 20 years later. The film indeed follows the Ghostbusters template right down to the Stay Puft Marshmallow Man-styled ending featuring a large, blob-like starfish without adding much to the formula. Julianne Moore is miscast, Orlando Jones is a little too over-the-top, and most of the humor derives from Seann William Scott’s all-too-familiar Stifler-esque character.

Even so, Duchovny clearly relishes the opportunity to venture into comic territory. Never in the history of film has a star boisterously exclaimed the line, “Give me back my friend you big sphincter!” with such satisfaction and conviction. It’s too bad Hollywood didn’t take note, because Evolution clearly shows he has what it takes to carry a comedy under the right circumstances.

If you need more convincing, check out the actor’s brief but memorable role in Zoolander:

Or, if you’re okay with simplistic, lighthearted entertainment, check out Duchovny in Return to Me, where he played the rom-com game alongside Minnie Driver:

Then again, perhaps audiences simply refuse to accept Duchovny as anything less than a cool cat in search for extraterrestrial life or battling drugs or sex addictions. At any rate, don’t weep too hard for the actor, who has made quite the career for himself via a variety of unique material. Or, maybe he was being funny all along and we just didn’t see it … perhaps Duchovny’s greatest comedy performance was out there all along as the following video attests, and we just never saw it. Now that would be hilarious!
