Director Lee Cronin was behind the camera for New Line‘s upcoming Evil Dead Rise, and he’s reuniting with the studio for an original horror feature called Thaw according to The Hollywood Reporter.

The upcoming film will be written by Cronin, who is set to rewrite the current draft of the film. The report mentions that Van Toffler and David Gale of Gunpowder & Sky, as well as Adam Goldworm of Aperture, are set to produce the feature. Thaw was initially written by Jeremy Passmore, who developed the project as an original spec script.

According to the report, Thaw is set “years after the polar ice caps have melted and the sea levels risen.” The film will then focus on “a group of survivors at sea searching for a new home. Their prayers are answered with the discovery of an inhabitable town, that is, until they encounter a new nightmare living just below the water’s surface.”

Prior to the upcoming Evil Dead Rise, Cronin also wrote and directed the 2019 supernatural horror film The Hole in the Ground, which starred Seána Kerslake, James Cosmo, Simone Kirby, Steve Wall, and James Quinn Markey. Before that, Cronin directed a handful of short films, including the 2014 award-winning short Ghost Train.

Scott Pilgrim Anime Series Coming to Netflix, Voiced by Original Film Cast

An anime series based on the Scott Pilgrim graphic novels is coming to Netflix, with voice casting that reunites the original Scott Pilgrim vs. the World cast. Michael Cera, Mary Elizabeth Winstead, Kieran Culkin, Chris Evans, Aubrey Plaza, Satya Bhabha, Anna Kendrick, Brie Larson, Jason Schwartzman, Alison Pill, Ellen Wong, and many more are in the fold, plus some new cast members who will be announced later.

Scott Pilgrim creator Bryan Lee O’Malley will co-write, executive produce, and serve as showrunner of the anime series alongside BenDavid Grabinski. Scott Pilgrim vs. the World director Edgar Wright is also among the executive producers.

In a press release, Wright called the original film “one of the proudest and most enjoyable achievements of [his] career.” He added, “Since the film’s release in 2010 we’ve done Q&As, remembrances and charity read throughs, but there was never the occasion to reunite the whole gang on an actual project. Until now… Original creator Bryan Lee O’Malley, along with writer BenDavid Grabinski have conjured up an anime series of ‘Scott Pilgrim’ that doesn’t just expand the universe, but also… well, just watch it. I’m more than happy to announce that I have helped coax the entire original cast back to voice their characters on this epic new adventure. You are in for a treat.”

Science SARU is the animation team behind the reboot, and Anamanaguchi, who composed music for the Scott Pilgrim vs. the World video game, are working on the score with Joseph Trapanese.

Secret Star Wars Movie Finds Its New Writer

Following Damon Lindelof’s departure from the secretive Star Wars movie currently in the works, a new writer has been brought on to write the screenplay.

Variety is reporting that Steven Knight, who is best known as the creator of the popular series Peaky Blinders, has been tapped to write the Sharmeen Obaid-Chinoy-directed Star Wars film. Knight has written quite a few movies in addition to his TV work, including 2018’s The Girl in the Spider’s Web and 2021’s Spencer, and is even the co-creator of Who Wants to Be a Millionaire? alongside David Briggs and Mike Whitehill.

This secret Star Wars movie is reportedly expected to be one of the first Star Wars movies to come out since the 2019 installment Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker, which was directed by J.J. Abrams. Little else is known about the project, though Lindelof’s departure marks the latest in a number of behind-the-scenes changes to the franchise’s future.

Quite a few Star Wars projects are currently on the horizon, including the Disney+ series Ahsoka, The Acolyte, and Skeleton Crew. The third season of The Mandalorian is currently releasing weekly on the streaming platform, while the video game Star Wars Jedi: Survivor is nearing its April 28 release date.
